Least stinky (but still tasty) natural dog chew

SultansOfMing · 23/10/2021 13:29

Our 3 month old puppy LOVES a good chew. But my 11 yr old son has sensory processing disorder as part of his ASC and literally retches at the smell of dried beef tendon which is her favourite! I can see his point, it does make the whole downstairs stink, but she loves it so much...

We have an antler and a yaker which she quite likes but they don't keep her occupied for hours like a strip of dried beef tendon!

So... What is super tasty and exciting, but won't make my son refuse to enter the downstairs of the house...? Tall order I know Confused

When it's suitable for her teeth, deer antler, basically no smell, do cost a bit but they last ages!

bingohandjob · 23/10/2021 13:40

Ostrich bones. Our pup loves them - they are probably his favourite and they make for some fantastic dinosaur bone looking photos Grin. And split antlers/antlers, or his Guru kibble made into a semi sludge pate having added splash of hot water to it before stuffing it in to make him a frozen Kong to keep him occupied for some time

Petalpup · 23/10/2021 13:45

I would also like to know the answer to this!

tizwozliz · 23/10/2021 13:53

Ostrich bones do smell imo. Ostrich braids (made from tendons) are really low odour.

WaltzingToWalsingham · 23/10/2021 13:53

How about pigs' snouts? They are available from pet shops in a sort of expanded polystyrene texture and my dog loves them. She also likes cows' and pigs' ears (although I think dogs are supposed to be at least four months old to have these). Avoid pizzle sticks/bully sticks - they really smell rather strong when chewed (they're dried bull penises).

We genuinely haven't noticed a smell from them at all. The mess, yes. The smell, no. Grin

Hairy cow bark (which he loves) is another matter Sad

RunningFromInsanity · 23/10/2021 14:13

Beef trachea?

FrenchyQ · 23/10/2021 14:17

Beef trachea really smells.
Puffed chicken feet don't smell.

zippidydooday · 23/10/2021 14:47

Paddywhack barely smells of anything.

Petalpup · 23/10/2021 15:36

Hairy cow bark is our dog’s favourite-literally hours of happy chomping.
But the smell is rank.

She likes an antler but it doesn’t hold her attention like the stinky stuff!

Do the ostrich braids last any longer than the lamb ones? She can demolish them in minutes

bingohandjob · 23/10/2021 15:45

Our lab will demolish the braids in minutes. He does love them, though.

Bebeschitt · 23/10/2021 15:57

@zippidydooday I thought paddywhack stank. She loved the piece we got but I regretted the decision to let her have it inside.
I think most dried dead things smell but least smelly in my opinion are hairy rabbit ears and the puffed up pig snouts.
I gave her a fish skin twist recently. Now that is high on the stink scale. 🤢

Second this suggestion!!!
SultansOfMing · 23/10/2021 16:53

It's all a bit Monty Python, the world of natural dog chews... Pig snouts, ducks feet, otters noses Grin

I'll try a pig snout next!

Ada's not had one since she was little so hard to say, they are in my bag of 'things puppy has tried once and loved but is no longer interested in' - it's quite a collection!

WeRTheOnesWeHaveBeenWaitingFor · 23/10/2021 18:45

Himalayan yaks milk chew
My very chewy teenaged spaniel will make it last about three days with no smell. The only other things he is interested in stink.

icedcoffees · 23/10/2021 19:00

I wouldn't give antlers, they can break dogs' teeth.

I sell natural dog chews for a living - the lowest odour ones are:

Puffed pig snouts
Camel skins
Buffalo ears
Buffalo skins
Rolled beef skins
Pigs ears
Lamb braids
Ostrich braids/skins/twists
Ostrich bones

santabetterwashhishands · 23/10/2021 19:05

I can't stand the smell of dog treats either so I buy mine pigs ears as they don't smell of anything x

ruralwanderer · 23/10/2021 19:31

Cow hooves are great. You can also stuff and freeze them for more variety and to make them even longer lasting.

TerrierOrTerror · 23/10/2021 19:51

The lowest smell ones we have that still keep her interested are buffalo ears (furry or not) and deer hide, both from Dragonfly Products.

Pizzles are a mixed bag, some can stink really strongly, others hardly noticeable. Avoid beef lung, it is a garden only chew in our house! Rabbit ears don't smell but don't last long.
