Where to toilet new pup?

We are renovating. 'Garden' is a mix of mud, work tools, broken glass and tiles etc. No grass at all!

We will fence off a safe area for our new pup to play and toilet, but what should go on the ground? We have a large section of fake grass, but will it be awful to clean poo off. Should we leave a section of mud/soil for toileting? Any ideas appreciated.

Our garden is in process of a slow renovation but we've sectioned a loo run at the end of it for pup to use as toilet area - it's half soil, half loosely but safely for little paws "paved" with bricks so he can choose. About 2 foot wide, 8 foot long I guess . For his first few visits we left the most recent poo there so he got the idea of where to go now we bag it and drop in lidded bin after each visit to go out in household waste. In this weather the rain pretty much sluices the area regularly but in the summer I would hose it down a few times a week. Doesn't smell. We've used low level edging fencing to clearly section it off for him. He will dash about playing the in the garden and dash to the run to do his business. For the first few weeks we had him he had a similar run on our concrete patio but we quickly realised it would be fun to have a stink of wee under the kitchen window in the summer as the urine smell hard to get out of concrete and we noticed it really quickly but not an issue now. He has a toilet command word and can be led down and asked to go before we take him out in the car etc.

Would NOT be fun Grin

Would a dog use kitty litter or just leave some soil available?

Our pup just poos/pees on the soil or bricks - no need for kitty litter, just adding to waste/cost. He has firm poos so easy to remove and the rain does the rest at the moment!
