When can the puppy be outside unattended?

I'm finding the mornings slightly overwhelming - family breakfast, watching the puppy, cleaning the crate... When can I pop the puppy outside for 10 minutes unattended? DH says not to do it, but I feel like if I don't the puppy will forever be in his crate ..

Outside in the garden? If your garden is secure and there are no toxic plants then sure go ahead but the puppy will prob dig and dig and dig! Or eat slugs/snails which is bad for them!

FortunesFave · 21/10/2021 09:20

You don't say how old he is which is obviously important...

liveforsummer · 21/10/2021 09:27

Do you mean shut them out? That's probably for a much older puppy but having the door open to let them go out any age as long as your garden is secure

Goawayangryman · 21/10/2021 09:29

As long as there are no hazards (like flights of stairs if a breed prone to dysplasia, plus all the normal ones like poisonous plants, ponds, holes in fences) then I'd say... Any time.

We did this a lot with little pup, I’d scatter small treats across the lawn mixed with things like frozen peas and she’d go nuts sniffing them out

It’s a great thing to do to give yourself some peace and the puppy loves it!

We had a puppy pen - used to pop it outside on the patio or the grass and let him run around for a bit. Meant we could do stuff without constantly watching him - if you looked away for a minute he would still be there, not under the fence/digging up plants/chasing squirrels etc

Whatever you do please don't let them out too early.

My neighbour has a yappy little fucker and no sense of how tired I am..

Mine was going out on his own from about 4 months, but I kept an eye on him. I discovered that he would much rather be in the garden than the house, and had a favourite position under an apple tree where he would have his collection of toys, and would sleep there as well during the day. He's a very independent soul. I'm afraid now the weather has changed the back door is shut, as I don't want a house full of mud. Don't expect your puppy to go to the loo outside independently unless you are there encouraging him.
When you say cleaning the crate, is he going to the loo in it? If so, you should really be taking your pup out more (in the night). If they get used to the idea that it's fine to crap and pee in the crate, you are making house training very difficult for yourself.

It depends on a whole host of things.

Is your garden completely secure? Will he bark? Are there poisonous plants he could eat or a pond he could fall into? Will he bother the neighbours or their dogs?

Mine dug a lot in his first year - if you left yours, would he destroy your lawn, for example?

Mine could be left out there for 10-15 minutes from about six months with no issues, but any longer than that and he'd get bored and create a nuisance of himself Wink

God no.

Puppies are little bastards and can get in trouble in seconds. That or they will kill off all your prized plants.

BrilliantBulb · 21/10/2021 15:01

If you’re needing to clean the crate every morning then you need to look at how you’re using it/doing toilet training. A dog shouldn’t be weeing/pooing inside their crate.

Wolfiefan · 21/10/2021 15:03

When it’s old enough not to bark and eat/dig up the garden.
Plus only for a very short time. And watch out. Dogs get stolen.

Goawayangryman · 21/10/2021 15:17

Good points about barking and theft. If you are totally enclosed with an undemonstrative pup, that's one thing. Accessible garden and a barky dachshund... Nope.
