Getting a puppy on Friday

I’m a mix of excited and terrified.
I’ve been looking for over a year and finally felt ready. Was planning to get a pup around Christmas time as I was in touch with a breeder.

But things just fell into place this weekend when I got talking to a lovely breeder and I’m now bringing home a cockerpoo which isn’t the dog id planned to get, and on Friday, so a weeks notice instead of the few months I had planned. It’s happening very quickly but I’ve been researching for a hear so I’m as ready as I’ll ever be.

I’m a little scared that a cockerpoo is going to be more mental than id prepared for though WineGrin

Our cockerpoo puppy arrives exactly a week later. Absolutely crapping myself about it. Grin

Pumpkin5piced · 18/10/2021 17:55

Oh good. Not just me. I think it’s because it’s happened so very quickly. I’ve literally gone out and bought everything today and haven’t even got my head around the fact I’m having a cockapoo now.
Was planning to get a calmer cavapoo.

Well either is a poo. Of which there will be lots!!
Grin

Very true Grin

I’m so nervous I feel like I’ve forgotten so many things and I’m not going to have a clue what I’m doing.

I’ve got a nine and half year old cockapoo
She still thinks she’s a puppy
She is high maintenance emotionally and requires a lot of exercise and stimulation still.

These dogs nights looks all cute and cuddle but actually they are a demanding dog to have and not for someone who doesn’t want to have two really good walks a day plus isn’t able to keep the dog company a lot of the time

But I love my girl to bits

FreshFreesias · 18/10/2021 18:25

Always cockapoos.
Always.
I work in rescue and so many of these fashionable dogs get bred to death.
It’s unethical.

NavigatingAdolescence · 18/10/2021 18:54

Mine is coming from a one time only litter. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Wolfiefan · 18/10/2021 18:57

@NavigatingAdolescence they are all a one time only litter. Sad

MrsRobbieHart · 18/10/2021 18:58

Why did your breeder have a puppy available at such short notice @OP?

GiveMeNovocain · 18/10/2021 19:01

Not all breeders of crosses are awful. My dog's mum had 2 litters over a few years. Her second one she had 2 pups and 1 had a heart problem. They had her spayed. She's having a lovely time. I know because her lovely owner posts loads of updates. I got her from a registered breeder. I know some are horrendous, but you can't just assume it's the case.

This one definitely is. The owner of the bitch is a family member.

NavigatingAdolescence · 18/10/2021 19:05

Mum and dad have both been genetically tested for all the usual issues. All 3 puppies are staying in the family.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 18/10/2021 19:06

much better to get her now rather than at christmas, that is the worst time to get a puppy

Pumpkin5piced · 18/10/2021 19:25

Both parents have had every possible health test and I’m really happy with the breeder. Hence me going ahead with it when I actually wanted a calmer cavapoo. Finding a cavapoo breeder with properly health tested cavaliers was near impossible.

@DebbieHarrysCheekbones I’m genuinely worried about the amount of exercise and stimulation she might need but I’m also fully expecting it. I like walks so that’s no issue. I didn’t want a lazy dog either. I think any dog I got would have needed a lot emotionally as you say because I was looking at lots of companion breeds. I guess it’s a bit of a lottery with cross breeds and energy levels but a cavapoo would have probably needed less. In the end I went with the best breeder rather than breed. Well just have to adapt our expectations.

I literally considered border terriers, cockers, cavaliers, shih tzus and everything in between.

This pup is actually 75% poodle.

She’s adorable!

Branster · 18/10/2021 20:16

She's gorgeous OP! I think I'm in love.

I do not know a single cockerpoo (no idea how to spell it) that is not a total nutcase 😁 I'd never had one and wish they would be bred less or not at all.

But they are absolutely adorable and great with kids and easy in terms of maintenance. Every owner I know absolutely loves theirs and would get the same mix breed so you'll be absolutely fine.
However, they need to keep busy. They are absolutely mental otherwise. Their behaviour in a larger breed would border on dangerous purely because they are on the go nonstop and chaotic. A lot of them seem to be quite vocal too and in most cases have a very annoying bark.

Honestly you'll be fine, stay 100% committed, invest most of your time and money in training and activities. Grooming should be secondary, behaviour is what you need to establish. But in a way that works for the dog, hopefully you'll find an activity your dog really enjoys even if it's not your choice of activity, go with it. Dog will be content and you'll have an easier time.

Maxstrong · 18/10/2021 21:58

Ohhh! They are both cute!

I would love to be getting one of those. I have a cross breed who is half poodle and he is the best dog I have had to date. He is lively and full of energy but chilled, calm and gentle when at home. He loves other dogs and people and has a lovely temperament. Enjoy your lovely pups!

cjpark · 19/10/2021 07:49

Good luck OP - they are very cute as puppies but absolute PITA's as dogs in my experience! Incredibly neurotic and needy and destructive to boot.
It may just be that these owners have not trained the dog of course - I do think lots of people fall for the cute long ears, 'non shedding', medium size family dog as a choice but under-estimate the work and demands of training essentially a cross between two gun-dog breeds. Get your training sorted and you'll have a lovely dog.

Floristry382 · 19/10/2021 08:39

Branster I know 2 cockerpoos and they aren't nutcases at all. They're great family dogs. Love playing with the kids, love a good walk but equally happy to be snuggled up on the sofa.

I hope all goes well OP. We have a cocker cross terrier, he's so chilled out, he just mirrors us-curls up to sleep when we're on the sofa, potters about with us in the house/garden, will walk for miles or just a once round the block if we can't manage it.

Discwriter · 19/10/2021 08:56

We have a 14 week springerdoodle and she is not a nutcase at all. Very sweet and eager to please. She likes going for a walk but also likes to sleep a lot as puppies do. It was the best breed for our family. We cannot rescue a dog with 2 children, despite working from home and having a large enclosed garden. Also not all breeders are unethical. Don't know why we have to always justify having an -oodle/poo. Enjoy your puppy OP Smile

bunnybuggs · 19/10/2021 16:20

They are not all mental - just occasionally they have a skittish episode.
I have a spaniel cross (aka a cockerpoo) who is 5 years old and cute as anything
BUT she is a small size - so does not cause lots of disruption
she loves to snuggle with humans
not too keen on other dogs in her face
she sheds loads and needs grooming periodically
she is very intelligent and remembers everything and everyone
she loves her walks and does not lunge or pull

The thing is people don't give enough time and thought to the training needed for what can be a hyper dog Sad and I would say the same about border collies.

Glitterybug · 19/10/2021 16:25

Don't know why we have to always justify having an -oodle/poo

Because pretty much all of them come from puppy farms.
