Any advice - burst benign tumor

Hello,

So long story but my dog has recently been for a fine need aspiration, this was done on 3 different lumps. 2 came back as warts which I thought they were but the 3rd and main one I wanted testing came back as a benign tumor.
After speaking to the vets we decided to have this removed (this coming thursday)
Yesterday my dog started to seem a bit off it and a bit quiet, she is older at nearly 12 though so she does have quiet times. Today when I've got up I instantly new there was something wrong. She just looked so sad and didnt want to walk much etc. After breakfast which she ate fine we went for a walk but she kept refusing to walk so we turned around and went home.
Got home, I looked down at her and noticed her benign tumor had actually burst (it's under her chin so not that easy to see) it looks ulcerated. I do have pics but they arent for the faint hearted.
Anyway I've spoken to the emergency vets twice, followed their instructions and sent them pictures of the before and after. They were happy for me to stay home with her and just continue for the thursday removal as planned.
My poor dog is down in the dumps, her next looks very sore and shes shaking in pain. She did have some pain relief around 11. Vet said I could give it twice.
One of the things that is worrying me is that the lump she had looked like a large wart and now the area is so much bigger...
Sorry this is so long but has this happened to anyone else? Any experiences and advice welcome!

Yes. This happened to my old boy on Easter weekend too because he liked to cost money. The emergency vet actually did a terrible (but expensive) job of temporarily patching it up.
The next morning he had decided to take matters into his own hands (teeth). He had wrestled his vest off and torn the dressing away. I went downstairs to what can only be described as a massacre scene.
Off we went to the emergency vets again who patched it up again.
We ended up using a combination of nappies and babygros until our vet could see him.
He was also knocking on in age but dealt with the op beautifully. He went on to have another op at age 16 which he also recovered from brilliantly.
The worst part of the whole exploding mass incident was keeping it dressed and keeping him off it. Once it was removed he was back to his usual self.
I would speak to your vet tomorrow to see if they can see her sooner. Thursday is a long way away.
Keep us posted. I hope she is well soon. Good luck.

Thank you so much for your reply and your positive story. Once the mass burst on your boy did the area get so much worse?
They suggested leaving it undressed today but like I said everything was done via phone and what's app pictures.
I think I'll give them another ring in the morning and see if I can get her in sooner for the removal.
Shes actually had the lump for a few years after having some removed at 6. Vets just said they were like warts/skin tags but the one that has burst had changed about 6 weeks ago now and that's what pushed me for further investigation.

It was pretty grim when it burst. It had to be covered because it was leaking constantly. Luckily for me DP is a medic so handy with a dressing. Not necessary with dog anatomy though!
He had a few fatty masses but this was something altogether different. It grew quite fast. Apparently it's quite common for the breed to have lumps and bumps in old age (he was a staffy, he died last year at the grand old age of 19)

Any update @Userss88?

Alwaysonthegoslow · 19/10/2021 13:13

Aww no advice, hope your dog feels better soon, poor thing.

@bebeschitt

So we struggled on until last night when I couldnt bare it anymore. She was at the vets this afternoon. They said they needed to operate straight away. Took her, put her under anesthetic. Then rang me and said actually now shes under and we've been able to look at it and clean it all back we cant operate. The area is too large and inflamed, if they did it they wouldnt be able to close it properly and she would end up not been able to move her jaw properly!! So shes back home again, shes had the area cut back and cleaned. Shes got a special gel we have to put on it twice a day and shes back on Friday, it's still a possibility that she will need an operation.

Thank you for asking x
