Tunnel wound in dog’s leg - help!

My dog is being treated for a sore on his leg. 4 weeks after initial cons it was discovered there was a tunnel wound under the sore. 4 weeks of antibiotics, healing and then erupting again.

He had surgery to have a look - he has 2 tunnel wounds under the sore, one is 8cm. No foreign body found, though I’m told that if one is there - eg grass seed they are very hard to find, so could be one still.

He had a dressing put on - standard dry dressing , padding, vet wrap. The follow up vet 2 days later was uncertain, but decided to recommend leaving wound undressed to dry out.

This was a week ago. I’m awaiting a referral to specialists (my request).
My immediate concern is the dressing. If I leave it without dressing, it will do what it’s been doing - dry out at surface, looked healed, but inside it can’t drain, so will erupt into a sore again. Also when I’ve researched, there seems to be idea that a tunnel wound should be packed and allowed to drain via a wet dressing. My vets are not addressing this point. I am also informed that many local specialists are not accepting clients unless life threatening condition due to nationwide shortage of vets!
If anyone knows of the accepted way to dress a tunnel wound in a leg, please, please could you let me know. I am dressing it now as leaving it open to air just made the wound more open. It’s at bottom of leg, he sleeps only on hard surfaces.

In humans with tunnelling wounds we pack them to absorb exudate and promote healing.
