Our lovely rescue moved in 4 weeks ago and he's well settled follows me to the loo like a toddler. He's a big one, 79cm from neck to tail and built like a tank. He's decided that now that he doesn't have to fight for food, plain kibble isn't sufficiently interesting for him (and I may have accidentally spoiled him after he hurt his lip just after he moved in Blush). What do your greys eat? I have him mainly on Burns sensitive as it seems to suit him better than Gain. In the morning he gets half a cup to keep him from nosing into the dc's breakfast but he leaves a lot of it. I have my own breakfast about 11 so he'll usually have a cup of kibble with scrambled egg and plain yoghurt (helps with the biohazard gases). Then I usually give him dinner when we have ours about 6 - 1.5ish cups of kibble with left overs from the previous night's people dinner, or if not suitable, a tin of tuna. He might have a dental stick or other chewey item (calf ear today - boak) during the day. I'm well aware that I'm more pliant about his dietary requests than the family's so I'd love to hear what silver service menus your hounds enjoy?

Oh, and if you can tell me how to get him interested in the stupidly expensive Kong that he just licked the peanut butter off, that'd be great too. Grin

I have two lurchers (and a foster puppy atm) and ddog1 is a complete snowflake when it comes to food. He would never eat just dry kibble (unless it belongs to the puppies) and has to have his wet food on a rotation otherwise he will just look sadly at it and wander off. He has Burns sensitive dry and then Burns wetfood (but not the egg one), Naturo grain free wet, and Chubb roll (which is vile and disgusting but he loves it and it suits his tummy) plus a tin of pilchards once a week.
Ddog1 has never been interested in a Kong, current dpuppy doesn't seem to understand them, and ddog2 would eat anything given half a chance

Brollywasntneededafterall · 16/10/2021 19:01

Our sighthounds have cooked veg every night and raw veg for treats.. And don't give off as much gas as you may expect on such a diet!!

I haven't tried him on any wet food yet. Good to know the Burns might work. And it would be a good back up for nights we don't have left overs. I have tried him with raw veg but he's having none of it. He did like carrots and sweet potato in last week's chicken stew though.

He (saluki greyhoundy type lurcher) is pretty much a victorian maiden aunt tbh. He spends his days reclining on the bed, occasionally emerging to take the air, but needs to wrap up against draughts in his long legged pyjamas

I was searching for long legged pjs for my boy the other night and dh got arsey that we've just had smart heating installed so it'll never be cold enough to need them. Smart heating isn't oft and fleecy though. Hmm

Mm mentions of pointy hounds and no pics is pretty shocking imo...

Holidaytan · 16/10/2021 19:55

Lots of dogs don’t eat kibble as it’s dull, dull, dull………..
You can feed him with puzzles or throw it for him to catch to keep his interest.
Raw food is much more tasty and interesting though. Raw bones provide entertainment through crunching etc. They will have a variety of flavours and textures as you offer different meats. Also fish, raw eggs etc are good.

CMOTDibbler · 16/10/2021 20:02

Ddog1 will be genuinely cold well before I am, and especially at night. Greyhounds have 30% less fat cells than other dogs, so they really do get cold. Can I recommend Spuds for PJs, and their dino onesies are just wonderful and guaranteed to raise a smile for anyone

CMOTDibbler · 16/10/2021 20:03

And a pointy puppy photo

Ours are what the greyhound rescue had them on, raw, but frozen tubs. Ours have 700g to a kg a day.

What have you tried in the Kong? I fill ours with yoghurt, cheese, hummus etc and then freeze it. I seal the bottom with peanut butter frozen round a straw (it need to keep the hole on the bottom), then add the filling and freeze again.

SheWoreYellow · 16/10/2021 20:07

We also get dried rabbit ears, pizzle, cows tail for them.

Pucarbuile · 16/10/2021 20:07

Good to know about boned. I admit, I'm nervous of giving them to him. Do you get them raw from a butcher or the pet shop ones?

Santa might bring him some pjs.

Here's his highness.

Ah gorgeous!!

Pucarbuile · 16/10/2021 20:12

I got calf ears which he's been really enjoying gnawing on. I give them to him if we're all going out for more than a few minutes, so he's distracted instead of anxious.

Ours loves Harrington's dry kibble with any brand of wet food mixed in. I think the wet food makes the kibble more tasty for them

Ostrich bones are safe and widely available. Our grey has kibble with a splash of hot water to get a gravy going; some meat topper (Forthglade or butchers) or sardines mixed in. I also add in some cooked oats for her coat. Snacks are fish skins; pigs ears and peanut butter likki mat x

Our pointy in a vest from Dog and Home. We find these easy to pop on and off as there are no legs to deal with. He definitely sleeps better when warm.
He eats Arden Grange grain free kibble (white fish and potato) with butchers grain free tins or sardines/ mackerel in oil or tomato sauce. Grain free does seem to have helped his 💩💩, it was like soup on Gain food.

Oh, he really likes rabbit ears- fur on. They may help as a natural wormer, but I’m not sure how true that is. He just loves them- bulk buy from Amazon.

Some gorgeois dogs and great ideas, thanks everyone. The poo picking situation has definitely improved since he's moved fully to Burns as his main feed.

plus snacks of cheese slices, bits of ham, occasionally a hardboiled egg and fruit such as mango, melon, apple and pear.

oh and he'll snap my hand off for a plain crisp.
