How to clean dog pee?

StarryNightSparkles · 13/10/2021 21:42

I have a little dog who at least once a week does a pee in the house. Mainly in my bedroom and hall. I have tried various methods of cleaning it up but nothing worked so we have ripped our carpets out and are awaiting new ones. I am stressing out that my new carpets are going to get ruined. Has anyone got any advice. How can I stop the peeing in the house and how can I clean it up so it doesn't smell?

Sop up the worst with an old towel and throw that outside. Then use carpet cleaning spray etc, rinse the spot with water & sop up that a few times (it helps to have lots of old towels if you have a dog!). Finish with a dousing of pet neutraliser spray. The aim is to remove or mask the smell of wee as thoroughly as possible.

Then take your dog outside and let him sniff the soiled towel. You want to give him the idea that's where wee goes. If he goes on or near that towel, praise him to high heaven.

Thanks very much Errol. I will try your advice.

Simple Solution (or the cheaper Wilko version of it) will help with the smell and detract pup from wanting to wee there again. You need to break down the wee not just cover up the smell.

Our pup had a small adolescent wobble weeing in the wrong spots (outdoors but on the lawn) and ushered to his loo area with some sprats that he got one he had done his wee in his command word with loads of fuss seems to have corrected it quickly.

Bicarb to eliminate the smell?

Sleepyhungryfattyanddoc · 13/10/2021 23:45

Depends why the weeing is happening.

If it’s always the same places it could be marking - make sure you’re using an enzyme Cleaner
Is there any sort of health issue preventing ddog from being house trained? - go to the vet if you’re not sure
Are they walked and stimulated enough so they aren’t destructive? - try increasing walks and make sure there’s time at the beginning and end for sniffing/weeing/pooping
What happens if you don’t allow access to that area of the house? - if it’s always the same place the obvious answer is don’t allow them there? Restrict access to ‘safe’ areas for a few weeks, then slowly increase freedoms in the house

Take your dog outside when s/he starts circling to wee

I would definitely get simple solutions. Cheap, easy to use, effective and prevents dog returning to the same spot

First things first your dog needs to see a vet to rule out conditions like a UTI.

To clean up the accidents you need a pet enzyme spray like Simple Solution, however if this has been going on for a while, the pee may have soaked through to the underlay in which case you may struggle to get rid of the smell entirely.

For now, I would stop your dog having any unsupervised access to the areas where he's peed and if he gets an all-clear from the vets, go back to toilet training him properly as if he was a pup.

Block access to any area that he tends to go whilst you're not there. He clearly thinks that it's a viable toilet option for him!
Watch him like a hawk the rest of the time and also see if you can work out timings for when he goes so you can get ahead of it. Just go back to basics with potty training.
Even marking inside is still solved with toilet training. It's annoying but a few weeks of back to basics will help.

We had this issue last year when we first got our puppy. He wasn't reliable with toilet training until he was about 5 months. Our living room carpet was horrendously stained. We cleaned with pet enzyme cleaner every time which removed all the smell but not the staining (cream carpets - never again!).

We had the carpet professionally cleaned but within a few weeks the marks reappeared. Although he hasn't had an accident for several months he has been sick a couple of times on the carpet in the last few weeks which means there are now more stains.

We've now ordered a wooden floor for the living room as I think another carpet is too much of a risk.
