Dog’s hips going?

I’ve had a look online and I can’t find anything specific to my situation so I wondered if anyone had had a similar experience. I have an 8.5yo lab with elbow dysplasia. He had an operation last year to put a plate in his elbow, which was successful, but he still limps constantly and will have to be on restricted exercise permanently. The vets have said that his elbow is as good as it’s going to get.

However, recently, his back legs have given way a couple of times when we’ve been out, usually when he’s changing direction suddenly. He’s also got himself in some awkward positions, for example when trying to squeeze under the high chair to pinch food from the baby (typical lab!) and needed help to move. I wondered if he might have sore hips due to overcompensating for his elbow, or if his hips go to avoid hurting his elbow more, or if there could be more to it. Does anyone know if hip dysplasia could follow elbow dysplasia?

I will take him to see the vet if it continues but he absolutely hates going and is petrified. He is also epileptic and has to go for blood tests now and again so he thinks he’s going to be injected every time he goes!

Unfortunately you could be right, that his hips have had to overcompensate for his elbows. A vet check is the best thing for him but I do understand how this is hard for him.

There is quite a bit that can be done for HD.

Look at CAMS they have a lot of online resources that may help you.
