What do you feed your dog daily?

Rescue dog shih tzu cross Maltese weighs just over 9kg first time dog owner, have him three months now and I'd just like to get a idea of what you feed your dog.
We feed him dry food select gold brand that was recommended from rescue centre and what they had him on so he's fed this twice a day, most days I would add some cooked chopped carrots or peas and occasionally parsnips.
We've had problems at times with him not eating much so we've also the sometimes given him wet dog food which he loved and gobbled up!
Is it ok just to feed him his dry food every day with above veg added in some days?

Aatu dog food. It's a dry kibble.
She gets fed twice a day.
Then at bed time she'll get a natural dog treat, eg cows ear, paddywhack, pizzle stick etc.
Occasionally my mum will feed her a couple of treats when she's over, but bar that she has a very boring diet!

Thatsplentyjack · 11/10/2021 06:37

Mine has a very sensitive stomach. Iver the years we have tried quite a few including special dog foods, the only one I managed to find that actually doesn't give him the runs is sainsburys own brand. Even then he an oy have the dry biscuits with some meat mixed in and their dental sticks as a treat.

Soubriquet · 11/10/2021 06:50

Mine have a bowl of barking head kibble down all day for them to graze at as they wish, and then in the evening they have half a tray of butchers each

GummyBearWhere · 11/10/2021 06:53

I cook a batch of this and mix it with dry kibble, fed once a day and it lasts about 5 days:
Chicken mince 500g
2/3 cup of cooked white rice
Lots of diced vegetables maybe two cups, usually a mix of carrot, broccoli etc
Sometimes a bit of diced bacon in it
Vegetable stock, rosemary and ginger

Don’t feed wet food, she’s never eaten it. It must be good for her digestion as on the odd occasion when we feed her other stuff (one night she had some bbq chicken with dry kibble, as I’d run out of the mixture) she traumatised us for the next day by letting off silent but deadly smelly farts.

Have an adult cavalier King Charles who is a bit heavier than yours. She also snacks on human food during the day and has raw meat ones from time to time, lately raw chicken wing.

GummyBearWhere · 11/10/2021 06:54

Raw meat *bones

BiteyShark · 11/10/2021 06:54

Cooked chicken in the morning as that is the only thing he will eat at that time and I can't send him to daycare with no food especially as he suffers with stomach issues and needs to eat frequently.

He gets a snack at lunch time.

Then his dinner is split into two late afternoon and evening and consists of wet dog food with a couple of dry biscuits and a carrot for pudding Grin.

Dry biscuits before bed again so he doesn't suffer from acid reflux overnight.

Recycledblonde · 11/10/2021 06:54

Bella and Duke complete raw for both mine, they have a kilo between them split into two meals. It includes veg and fruit plus bone. The vet says they are very healthy and I never have a scrap of food left.

Skyla2005 · 11/10/2021 06:57

You will get so many different views on what's the best food. I think a good kibble with nothing artificial added with a bit of wet food mixed in is a safe bet my dog has Harrington's dry food it's Uk made with a good meat content and nothing bad added. The wet food mixed in makes it tasty

ChuddleyCannons · 11/10/2021 07:04

Butternut box

Indoctro · 11/10/2021 07:05

Millies Wolfheart kibble with 1/3 Tim of Millie's wet food

Twice a day

Fish flavour

No chicken as it's one of the main culprits for allergies and my dog has occasionally itchy skin so we stick to fish

WisestIsShe · 11/10/2021 07:07

My dog has allergies so is limited. He has eukanuba vet diet mixer and lily's kitchen wet food.

Girlintheframe · 11/10/2021 07:54

Our dog is only fed fish and veg due to allergies.
Morning and evening gets Millie wolf heart
Get two Tribal biscuits for supper.

Will also usually get at least 1 fish treat and/or a raw carrot after a walk or daycare. Sometimes gets peanut butter or Greek yoghurt too as snacks

alpinia · 11/10/2021 09:42

Orijen. We did the research after the puppy food he came with was terrible and this was the closest we could get to an ideal diet while still being kibble. At one point we switched to Acana which is the same company but a lower price point. We went back to Orijen straight after. He's glossy, muscly and fit. People ask us in the park what we feed him.

It is expensive, but because the ingredients are very high quality he doesn't eat as much of it as he did with other foods so it more or less evens out.

languagelover96 · 11/10/2021 11:08

Kibble
Smaller portions of our food

SuperheroBirds · 11/10/2021 11:21

Millies Wolfheart kibble twice a day. Then two “main” treats a day out of - raw carrot, fish skin, cow’s ear, beef head chew, or paddywack. And a few fish based smaller treats when out on a walk or training.

Mine are bigger dogs, so their treats might be bigger. Pork and chicken disagrees with them, so we tend to stick to fish and beef based foods/treats.

Nanananani · 11/10/2021 11:28

Breed specific kibble twice a day

Some treats for training and a dental chew thing at bed time

XiCi · 11/10/2021 11:32

Shih tzu x bichon and I feed him butternut box with a little handful of kibble and he gets various bits of leftovers. Surely if she doesn't eat much of the dry food but gobbles up the wet food you would just feed her the wet food? Don't see any point in carrying on giving food they don't enjoy!

OohMrDarcy · 11/10/2021 11:36

80-10-10 raw complete minces here. One 500g pot lasts 2 days, plus a raw sprat every other day gets chucked in

Nanananani · 11/10/2021 11:43

I’m amazed at all the leftovers etc - does it not upset their stomach? Make poos really unpredictable? Encourage them to mooch for food?

Nanananani · 11/10/2021 11:43

Wondering if we’re way too strict

SuperheroBirds · 11/10/2021 11:48

I think the best thing we’ve done with our dogs is never feed them “our” human food. They don’t beg or disturb people when eating, and they are in great physical condition as it is so easy to keep track of what they are eating.
Kiduknot · 11/10/2021 11:49

Ours was fussy too. Weighs the same as yours.

Kibble fed in the morning and left out all day for her to graze on.
Kibble soaked in the slightly warmed up veg water and mixed with some veg in the evening.

We cook up about 4 days worth of veg at a time and save the cooking water.

A few other dog treats through the day but no human food unless fruit or veg.

Kiduknot · 11/10/2021 11:49

Or chicken

XiCi · 11/10/2021 12:42

I’m amazed at all the leftovers etc - does it not upset their stomach?
Never, but I am careful what we give him. Just little bits of meat, bread, fish if its leftover and some cheese for training. I dont give him Indian takeaway etc
Make poos really unpredictable?
No, like clockwork. Morning and evening walks Encourage them to mooch for food?
No, he's not massively food motivated, is happy with what he gets and never begs for food.

Cheesepuff1 · 11/10/2021 12:45

Able raw packs or butternut box. wet foods, pre weighed and individual packets, freezable and the dogs LOVE it.

check out allaboutdogfood.com and check the dry food you are feeding has a good score. the vast majority aren't very good at all. you want a 95% plus rating
