Good dog walking coat?

Wowzers71 · 09/10/2021 15:10

Hello all - just got our lovely new pup and I'm realising that my slightly small rain jacket isnt going to be much use on 6am walks in the freezing rain this winter. Any suggestions for a good coat for dog walking? Looking for something both warm and waterproof. Thanks

I've got this one, and it's great for shoving on in the mornings (it's warm!)
link, I think they're currently doing 15% off, a popup should appear when you go onto the website

Joules touchline coat is amazing, (if they still do it) lightweight but lovely, long, and so warm.

Sitdowncupoftea · 18/10/2021 16:35

Any warm waterproof coat with a hood is suitable. I dont go for designer brands more quality. I would rather be warm than freeze for fashion. I have a wax jacket that is long length. I'm out 365 days a year all weather.

Wowzers71 · 18/10/2021 18:22

Thanks for the suggestions, will have a search around online. Standing in the garden in the bucketing rain this morning at 6am in only a light jacket while puppy had a pee made me realise that I really need to sort this out! Grin

I have one for walking the dog. It almost reaches my knees. Has a furry hood. I don't love the look of it but when it rains you can see the water just run off it. It was from mountain warehouse. I had a similar coat that I loved from fat face. It was really think but seemed to soak up the water and I got soaked.

I have this one bit I think it's been discontinued

This (I found mine in a charity shop - best find ever) and a leather hat -a million times better at keeping off the rain than a hood. You can bung loads of layers on underneath too.

I am never wet. I may not look cool but I am always warm and dry. I do live semi rurally though so I don't look out of place.

Ooh no but it is in the sale! I love that I can have it unzipped it still have the fleece inner (false one) done up for ventilation. And it has a treat pocket. On walks it's warm but not hot. Definitely not a snow coat but absolutely fine for 95% of winter weather.

Indecisivelurcher · 18/10/2021 18:42

Following, I've seen didrikson recommended on here but they're so expensive, I've been looking second hand but not seen one yet.

Bran21 · 18/10/2021 18:45

I've got a 3 in 1 berghaus ,never had it re waterproofed had it over 10 years. I take fleece out at summer. Might not be trendy but I'm warm and dry!!

I have a didriksons and its great - really warm and waterproof - I got mine through the Sportamore website which was a lot cheaper than the Didriksons website - mostly last years models but lots of choice.

Thanks!

I got mine from Seasalt. They've got loads, but mine comes down to the top of my wellies, so keeps my legs dry as well. 100% waterproof, warm, and has a hood as well. Deep pockets for poo bags too.

covetingthepreciousthings · 26/10/2021 18:06

Didriksons - highly recommend! Expensive but totally waterproof, wind proof and warm.

SummerSeaSwimmer · 26/10/2021 18:19

I find a need a whole range of different coats, jackets, gillets, hats and boots for dog walking. Going out into whatever the weather has to throw at me twice daily all year round has really expanded my outdoor clothing wardrobe.

I find horse-riding jackets tend to be the best.

icedcoffees · 26/10/2021 18:21

I would go for a proper outdoor brand rather than a fashion brand, as they're likely to be waterproof to a higher level, breathable and practical (big deep pockets, waterproof zips, adjustable hood) etc.

Up until recently, I had a Rohan Ascent jacket (I think it's been renamed now) which is still waterproof but unfortunately worn out on the seams and ripped in a few places.

I replaced it with a £75 one from Regatta which survived the storms I was walking in for several hours this morning!

MrsPnut · 26/10/2021 18:22

I've got a Seasalt one, www.seasaltcornwall.com/fleece-lined-waterproof-womens-janelle-coat not the most stylish but as well as dog walking my daughter plays rugby and this comes down to my wellies almost.

I've had mine years and it still looks as good as new.

TheOriginalMrsMoss · 26/10/2021 18:23

I got a long horse riding coat from Ebay for £30. It's fantastic and fully waterproof. I've walked the dog in torrential rain and been bone dry afterwards. It has plenty of room for layers.

Second the Janelle. Had mine 4+ years and still like new. Warm, waterproof and long length. I have a Didriksons parka that I love but wouldn't be my choice for dog walking as I think I'd get too hot and stuffy.
Weedsorwishes · 26/10/2021 21:13

we don't have a dog yet but I'm out in all weathers with my toddler I have the regatta Serleena ll from go outdoors it is excellent and decent price

StormyCornishSeas · 26/10/2021 21:20

Following! Whilst i want the waterproof to be lined I don't want it too thick. I get very hot like a greenhouse effect in waterproofs. And whilst it needs to weather a Cornish storm WinkWink it's normally pretty muggy and mizzley and rarely freezing cold

dustofneptune · 26/10/2021 22:42

I find wearing layers better than a standalone jacket. In really really cold weather, a puffer jacket is amazing, but not fully waterproof. Whereas fully waterproof jackets just aren't ever warm enough for me.

You could buy a 3-in-1 jacket (usually a waterproof outer layer with a puffer jacket inside). But the good ones can be really expensive. :o

I wear a North Face Resolve II jacket as my waterproof layer. It's amazing. I prefer the men's one because I like it oversized.

Then underneath, I wear layers from UniQlo. They do an awesome windproof fleece hoodie, puffer jacket, and thermal layers. :)

As a side note, I find mid-thigh to be the best length for walking jackets, as if they're much longer they get soaked and muddy when bending down to pick up dog poop! Grin

UndertonesOfCake · 26/10/2021 22:46

I've repurposed an old ski jacket for dog walking

Freeekedout · 26/10/2021 23:15

If you feel the cold, Regatta do a waterproof coat with USB for a built in heater. It's a game changer! £80 from Amazon.
