Off lead walks plus a baby... how?

I do at least one off lead walk a day..usually across fields, through woods, meadows etc as my girl is nervous and we like space!
I am going to be caring for my grandson on my non working days ..he'll be about 10m old when my dd2 goes back to work.
Her pushchair is pretty poor over rough ground, so that's no use.
Anyone who walks a dog plus a baby/toddler... what is best?
Should I get a (second hand) off road pushchair ...(any suggestions welcomed!) or would a backpack carrier be better? I have some back problems so it would need to be supportive, but could probably manage an hour or so.

I am a 58yr old foster mum to a 17 month old and a 4 month old, I also own a 2yr old spaniel/terrier cross. We take the dog for an off lead walk every day, I use an Out n About Nipper 360 for the 17 month old and a sling for the baby. The buggy is brilliant and can handle everything I throw at it, it is also easy to fold and light as buggies go.

I would highly recommend off-road buggy with good suspension/pump up tyres. My favourite so far were Mountain Buggy, an oldish type of Bebecar (old fashioned type with solid 4 air tyres and bouncy) Baby Jogger City Mini GT(not much of suspension but copes well on uneven ground )
If you are already struggling with your back do not use a sling,10 month old baby can be really heavy. You may find backpack type carrier easier but only for short walks.
I had to walk my dogs with my children since they were born so had to test few of them to find the one that will keep them comfy and let us walk literally everywhere.

Baby jogger mini

Out n about nipper saw me through 4 years walking with a baby/small child and dog. We did some pretty rough tracks, fields and firm sand on beaches (bit tricky through softer sand). I miss having it to carry coats and picnics. They are usually quite easy to find second hand, and I sold mine for a decent price when I’d finished with it. You may want to consider having tyres slimed to protect against punctures (I had mine done in a bike shop) and carry a bike pump with you.

Ah my advice is only as a parent - I waited till my DP got home and then went, gave me a break from the toddler, rofl, probably not so useful if you’re volunteering to have the toddler.

I wouldn’t do a backpack or sling though, as a dodgy back person, I really struggled with those once they weren’t tiny babies.

Def an out and about nipper. They are so light and easy to steer/push over pretty much any terrain. Loads of basket space too and the wheels easily pop off if you need to fit it in the boot.

I live rurally and walked my dog up hills, forest tracks, fields, beaches, through rivers(!) With children in an Out and About Nipper or in a really good quality back pack carrier. I had a very bad back at the time and found the back pack carrier easier on my back as I tended to hunch over if pushing the buggy up hill.

Thanks everyone. I think I shall look out for a Nipper/jogger! I like the idea of a backpack but am unsure my back can take it!

The baby jogger city elite is fab offroad (I've done some serious offroading with and without dogs and DS survived so far), but I think anything with big wheels, air tyres and suspension would work as well. If they're decently made you can get one second hand to do the job.

I was going to suggest a carrier (not a backpack?) but try to he buggy recommendations

scully29 · 11/10/2021 21:05

I would defo use a sling, an ergo is great.
