Puppy toilet training overnight

We are about to get a puppy in a few weeks and I'm starting to get nervous! I understand for the first few weeks it's every 30 minutes outside and after meals. But what about at nighttime? We've got a small puppy crate. Should I take puppy out every few hours for a wee?

If you’re on FB look at dog training advice and support. They have great files on this.
You need to sleep near the pup so you wake when it wants the toilet.
And crate training takes time too.

The way I did it (no idea if it’s right or not) was to take him out just before I went to sleep and then I set the alarm and took him out 2 hours later and so on. As he was always dry, the following night I left it 3 hours and then 4 hours etc until he would just go out as we woke up in the morning.

We crate trained our pup.
The crate went in the kitchen
We took her drink away a few hours before bed, She had a wee before bed, then let out at 6am.
We didn't get up through the night, she only wet for the first couple of nights.

This is what I did too, never got up during the night with them or slept downstairs.

Don’t leave them without access to water it’s cruel .

Brownlongearedbat · 30/09/2021 16:02

I agree with @floralnomad. Puppies, like babies, don't have bladder control - when theyve gotta go, they've gotta go. With holding water so they don't wet, or wet less, is like not giving a baby his last evening bottle to teach him not to wet his nappy. It's pointless and unkind.
OP, every puppy is different. With mine I have them sleeping in a crate in the bedroom and then get up 3 to 4 hours later to take them out for a wee. Neither of mine (now 4 and a half and 5 months) cried at night because they can see me. I gradually make the time longer as their bladder control improves until they can go around 7 hours. It also helps to have a night time winding down routine, so that they are sleepy and relaxed at bed time - and not hyped up from some crazy game.

Puppies are so different, each one needs to be treated as an individual. They should definitely have access to water all day, but I think it’s O.K. to remove the water bowl a couple of hours before bed. That’s what I have done in the past and now again with my current puppy. It does seem to help with the house training process.

PollyRoullson · 30/09/2021 16:30

Never wake up a sleeping puppy! expecially at night. Sleep near them when they stir take them out for a wee then straight back in for more sleep.

Most puppies will sleep at night for several hours without needing to go out.

All puppies need access to clean water 24/7. Ironically a thirsty puppy will wee more frequently but in lesser amounts than a hydrated puppy. Eg one big drink one big wee, restricted drink lots of mini concentrated wees.

However despite that fact it is horrid to restrict a basic need eg water .

My puppy was a Romanian rescue, nearly 5 months old, completely untrained, unsocialised and she was toilet trained in a couple of weeks. Apparently the average puppy should overnight be able to hold wee and poo an hour for every month of age.
I have never slept with a puppy so I used puppy pads (covering a decent area of the kitchen floor)and I guess instinctively she used them. During the day I took her outside every 30 minutes and last time was about 10.30pm. Up at 6 and straight outside.
I didn’t crate or pen her, she had the run of the kitchen, radio on very low, water available 24/7.
Every puppy is different but she’s certainly the easiest I have ever had!
Now at 9 months old she sleeps on the settee, 10-7, no problems.

YanTanTetheraPetheraPimp · 30/09/2021 16:41

Incidentally, restricting water means concentrated wee which can irritate the bladder, hence never restrict it.

tizwozliz · 30/09/2021 16:46

We never restricted water, never woke her, just took her out when she woke. She only ever had two accidents in the house (both our fault) and none overnight.

Daisy4569 · 30/09/2021 17:12

Ours used to let us know if he woke up so we would just come downstairs and let him out in case he needed the toilet.

icedcoffees · 30/09/2021 17:27

Please do not restrict her water. Just as we sometimes get thirsty at night, dogs do too. They should have access to water at home 24/7.

We had our puppy in our bedroom and we never had a single overnight accident. When he woke and needed the toilet, he scratched/hit the door and someone took him outside.

Wisteriac43 · 02/10/2021 11:30

Thank you! I think we will have the crate downstairs so I'll start off sleeping down there and see how it goes. Fingers crossed!

We slept in the living room with our puppy and just woke up when he woke up.

Honestly toilet training was much easier than I expected. I think it all definitely depends on the dog, but you will know what to do once the puppy is home

YoghurtWeaver · 02/10/2021 15:09

Our pup came home 2 weeks ago (at 8 weeks old) and from the very first night has slept 9.30pm-6am without waking! I was sleeping on the floor next to her crate in the expectation that I'd be up and down with her through the night but nope Confused So I don't know about this 1 hour for every month of age, because she is absolutely definitely able to go for much much longer. And when she does go out (as soon as she wakes) she runs to the end of the garden to wee immediately, but doesn't poo until she has sniffed in circles for a few minutes to choose the Perfect Poo Spot HmmGrin

You got very lucky! Grin

The hour rule is also for during the day - all animals (including us) can "hold it" for longer at night.
