Hi my nearly 6 month old golden was put under yesterday to do X-rays on his hips and elbows . He has hip dysplasia and elbow issues . They found a line going down his left leg . When I picked him up he seemed really sleepy but that was it . As soon as we got home he refused to go in the house I had to basically push him in and since then has acted very strange . He will not settle at all . Everytine he drops off he wakes him self up and starts pacing around in circles . Crying . Then barking . He won't come near me much at all either . He's also got diareah but I have read it's common after sedation . He's not off his food or water so that's one good thing but he's acting like he doesn't k ow where he is or wants to be left at all. I'm in work now and he followed me upstairs but then starting crying his head off half way down the stairs and woundnt move . Any ideas if this is normal please ? I'm in work now and have only had an hours sleep with him 😥. Thankyou

I would ring the vet when you can as would want to check, this doesn’t sound normal to me but they will be best place to know. Has he got someone with him? Good he has a close eye on him while like this too and reassurance. I hope you’re ok as must be unsettling.

Could be a reaction to the anaesthesia- I’d call and discuss it. My dog kept falling asleep sitting up and nodding, which woke him up. Wore off after about a day.

Check with the vet. However as a human who was put under for various nhs checks, it took me 5 weeks to feel normal again

Thankyou so much for your replies .my daughter is at home with him until 8. Then my mother comes up at half past to take him down her house until I come home but I am tempted to take the day off when I finish this job at 9 . I honestly think he's traumatised. He has separation anxiety with me also hates being locked in anywhere has a proper panic attack . So they said to bring him over at 8-30 yesterday and would be put under 1st thing . I phoned at 1-30 to see how he was and only then he was put under ! So all day the my poor boy was probably hysterical. I'm going to phone the vets as soon as they open . I just phoned my partner because he's leaving for work now . It's the 1st time I have let him sleep in the living room when I'm gone and he has chewed up my door Matt 😂 he's had his eye on it for weeks little shit x

Odd behaviour is 100% normal for a day or two after a GA. They can be drunk, whiny, clingy or distant, pacing, whatever. He should be much better this evening and perfect by tomorrow OP!

BiteyShark · 30/09/2021 06:41

They can really be out of sorts after a vet admission with anaesthesia but yes ring your vet for advice/reassurance.

Branster · 30/09/2021 06:44

I had a Goldie who had GA about 4 times in his life. Reacted terribly, like a drunk almost. Crying, very confused, falling asleep randomly on the spot, upset tummy. Somewhat comical to watch but it breaks your heart seeing them like that.
First time it happened I was really concerned but it is the way he reacted to GA. very skinny dog so that might have been a reason too.
Tell the vet so that they are aware for when he ever needs GA again. No idea what they do, but first was the absolute worst, then a bit better - maybe different GA method?
Dog was absolutely fine within 24h.

How is he today?

Scattyhattie · 01/10/2021 16:46

My dog was very whiney and unsettled after anesthesia for about 24hrs. I've since discovered it was side effect to the bupracare(?) sedative and was all fine when specialist who uses methadone as standard so have my own vet use that now.

Veterinari · 01/10/2021 16:53

How is he today?

Has he had pain relief? If he was being frayed for dysplasia joints then the positioning can actually be pretty painful

FizzyTango · 02/10/2021 11:04

How’s he doing? My pup was very odd for about 24 hours after anaesthesia. And after that he didn’t wag his tag or successfully catch a ball for about 3-4 days after. Then he was fine, I think he must have just been a bit out of it for a couple of days.

HipHopanonymous · 02/10/2021 11:09

Aww poor boy, its the anaesthetic - my terrier acted really weird for about 5 days after his! Just as I was worrying that he'd never be the same again a visitor brought him a toy, he ran around like a loon and was fine after that.

Give him time and space, don't worry about what's happened before (being alone and unsedated at the vets for hours, he's forgotten that for now), he'll be back to his old self soon enough.
