How to stop puppy jumping out the back door?!

Jinny is 10 weeks tomorrow and won’t stop jumping up at the sofas. The worst thing is she horse jumps out the back door! We’ve tried picking her up to carry her out but we always have the back doors open to help toilet train. She literally runs and jumps! It’s driving me insane and I’m worried :(

Can you keep the door closed instead, and watch for signs of her needing the toilet - then acting on that and opening the door to go out to go? This may be the only solution for now.

Sounds like Jinny is having a great time right now puppies are a HANDFUL and will need careful training.

Having the door open will not help toilet training so close the door .

You need to shut the back door, it really doesn't help with toilet training. As I'm finding out now!! My puppy is older than you at 21 weeks, and the whole open door thing has back fired massively. We're basically starting again, and I've just ordered some bells. Have you seen them? Might also distract her from leaping out the back door, if you're training her to ring them.

Having the door open won't be helping toilet training, so keep it closed!

I wouldn't worry about her jumping out the back door - unless there's a huge drop to the garden it really won't do her any harm.

10 week old puppy jumping up at sofas?
What were you expecting?!

Jinnybean · 30/09/2021 09:37

Bells are coming today! She literally shows no signs of needing a wee. She will walk and just stop and wee. If she needs a poo she will bark to go out and she’s kind of on a routine for that lol.
And I have it figured at night as she sleeps in our room so when she wakes up I take her out.

Yeah cos she's 10 weeks old? You need to toilet train her to get her to that stage, you can't expect her to be telling you when she needs out already. I'm not a fan of the bells but it works for some people. I'd just keep the door shut and take her out every 15/20 mins.

It’s very normal for them not to show any signs at that age, you’ve just got to go out often enough that it clicks that that’s where they’re supposed to go.

She's a baby. You have to teach her almost everything. The first six months are when the heavy lifting is done for the rest of their lives. If she is jumping on sofas, attach a houseline so you can gently remove her and reward her as soon as she is at ground level. Dog training is 50% timing, 50% consistency.

When mine jumps (especially up at the sofa) I say DOWN and reward as soon as 4 paws are on the floor, she's 14 weeks and getting it
