Greyhound toys

I'm a bit sad about my new retired greyhound's toy situation.

She's destroyed all the tough ones I can find. I've just given her a big caterpillar as I saw that most don't destroy it - nope, hole and stuffing coming out within 3 minutes.
She was so excited and happyConfused then so sad when I took it away (I gave her a lickimat as compensation)

Only one that has survived is a fluffy kong as you could take out the squeaker. But she's not much interested.
She has some rubber squeaky toys and a ball but not interested.

I'm going to go to pets at h and get a kong wobbler. I've got a kong as well. But nothing gives her the joy of a cuddly squeaky toy. DD says it's because she wants to kill it and perhaps we shouldn't be encouraging that anyway.

Any ideas? Have tried outward hound toys - dead .

Amazon only as I'm just returning when they're dead.

Might it be worth trying again in a year? Or will she always be a destroyer ?!

Have you tried flat ones without stuffing? They tend to last longer as you can let them play with it for longer even after it’s been “killed”

tiddlysquat · 27/09/2021 19:48

Yes I had an outward hound snake and she chewed it in bits within half an hour!

Our Greyhound was exactly the same.

Ah right, I don’t know outward hound stuff - so didn’t know what they do.

My other tip is charity shop kids ones, lol, make sure they’ve no button eyes or anything and just let her destroy them because you can usually get them for like 50p

tiddlysquat · 27/09/2021 20:56

Yes I was thinking that, but I'm worried she would swallow the innards?
Maybe will try again with another flat toy, it's just such a worry watching her !

Ours has all the kids’ old teddies. He doesn’t eat the stuffing just rips it all out. We remove plastic bits like eyes first. He enjoys the act of destruction a lot!

tiddlysquat · 27/09/2021 21:22

Hmm maybe I'm being too careful especially with the flat ones, I take them away when they've been ripped

My Lurcher was the same with soft toys, but absolutely adored them, so we had a toy hospital, ie, I used to repair them on a regular basis! He used to sit and watch me with a highly concerned expression while I did it.

I wouldn’t remove the unstuffed ones if they are just ripped. I just removed any parts that were small enough to swallow. My boy used to love flinging about ripped up fabric. He played with a fluffy duck wing for years! Grin

I also bought multiples of the toys he liked best and supervised play with them, encouraging exchanges and retrieves, rather than just evisceration.

He had one toy that lasted years, but I bought it in a sale and have never managed to find another. It was a big pink flamingo, which contained a large rubber cylinder that made up it’s body and never lost it’s squeak. The closest I have found are some toys made out of the stuff they make fire engine hoses with, but they aren’t soft on the outside.

What about the Kong Knots Range?. They are stuffed with knotted rope, rather than soft stuffing.

Plaited fleece tugs were also a big favourite for my boy to chuck about and shake. You can just buy cheap fleece by the metre and make them yourself. Either simple plaits with a knot at each end or more complicated braids. There are lots of YouTube videos on how to do it. Rope toys were a popular choice here too.

There are also toys that you can buy that are designed with bits to pull out (little log type thing with squirrel stuffed toys that can be hidden inside the log then pulled out) and I think Kong do toys that are held together with heavy duty Velcro that the dog can “tear” apart. Might satisfy the destruction urge?

tiddlysquat · 28/09/2021 06:57

Thanks! I think im going to try a kong Teddy knots and a skinneeze extreme stuffkingless and as you say just keep repairing them, and have a supervised play session . If she eats the fabric it's not as bad as stuffing ! Both of them have some reviews saying they get destroyed but also look like they might be repairable and the knots toy is recommended on a few greyhound sites Confused

@sewinginmyfreetime that's a good thight, I'll have a think. I've seen the mini squirrels one but I'm just worried she would choke on them.

You have my sympathies! I have a Saint and she destroys all squeaky toys within minutes 😂

tiddlysquat · 28/09/2021 07:29

It's just that she's new and pretty nervous and the only time I see her animated is with the toys - and then I remove them ....Sad

It could well get easier in time. Ours was a real chewer of toys when we first got him over a year ago and even now he occasionally likes to rip into a tennis ball that he's found or a new toy (but with the latter he'll stop if he's told not to). We have a fair number of flat toys lying around that he largely ignores now.

A good one was a Tough Toys ball that he found on a walk - they seem to be pretty much indestructible.

Does she get something to gnaw on that's allowed? Ours loves an ostrich bone for 20 minutes and has an antler bone that he occasionally chomps. He also pinches sticks and chews on them (though thankfully he spits out anything he chews off).

tiddlysquat · 29/09/2021 12:26

I've got her an ostrich bone but then I thought I should build up to it, maybe chicken feet etc to start with?

OP posts:
Definitelyrandom · 29/09/2021 12:53

@tiddlysquat I think we gave ours the ostrich bone without any warm up. The fun thing is distracting him after 20 minutes or so to get it off him!
