Dogs in campervans

How do yours travel? We are thinking of buying a campervan but not sure what to do with our labrador & fox terrier. Do you use a crate or seat belt?

Any tips would be welcome!

We are also thinking this way. I think it’ll be a seat belt restraint but depends if you can secure the crate ( would prefer ) and that depends on layout.

Some of the fixed bed set ups have built in crate/ kennel beneath the bed!)

We use a crate for travel and then ddog sleeps in it at night. She is used to being in a crate at home though so that helps. We have an easily collapsible one

We use a crate. It fits perfectly between the seats in the dining area. Collapsed and stowed above the cab when we’re parked up.

My dogs just lay on the floor in the rear of my camper. One usually curls up in the shower tray.

Ours just lie on the floor. They’ve each worked out the special place that’s “theirs” & I put one of those soft fleecy beds in each of them to lie in. Never been a problem through years & years in several different vans with multiple dogs.

I don't have a dog, this came up in active and I clicked because I have a camper van.

I know that in the campervan/motorhome world many have dogs and on various facebook groups when this question is asked over and over again. It is always said the best thing for dogs is a harness attached to a fitting like a seatbelt

A cage can be secured but the dog inside would be rattling around inside it if you were in an accident, like an egg inside its shell if you shook it.

There is also the chance that if you have an accident the cage could open and your dog escape into the traffic and be hit.

Like I say, I don't have a dog but know how much people love theirs, anyone I love would not be travelling without restraint in my van.

On a side note, get a van your life will change for the better Smile

Lots of food for thought there. Thank you. Our dogs are crate trained at home anyway, and the crates collapse down for storage, so looks like the best solution

@LikeAbatOutOfHell
Crates are well recognised for dogs as the safest mode of transport.

Maybe they do “ rattle around “ but equally a lead style tether allows the dog a lot of play if there is a crash and will probably break ( or the harness may) or if on a collar the dog risks a broken neck.

Nothing makes the risk zero

Ours travels with a restraint on her harness but sleeps on bed n floor
