Toilet training at night without crate

Pup is 9 weeks old today. We have a crate but she absolutely hates the door being shut. She loves eating her food in there for going in there for a nap.

She has the free run of the living room and we have temporary puppy proofed with the sofa cushions. The problem is she wees at least 2ce during the night and doesn’t alert me she needs to go. During the day she’s fab but we always have the back doors open, so if they are shut she doesn’t give us much warning. She’s only pood inside twice.
I have no idea how to tackle this, everything I read before getting her was to crate train but it breaks my heart hearing her cry.

Do I just be harsh and stick ir out?

Have a look at FB dog training advice and support.
Having the door open isn’t toilet training though. You need to be there and actually taking the dog out and praising when pup goes.
At that age I would be sleeping near pup so you can hear them stir and get them out.

Do you get up in the night to take her out? Even with a crate we had two alarms through the night at that age, gradually shifted them and by 11 or 12 weeks (I can't remember) she was dry through the night and sleeping through. Imagine a similar approach would work without a crate too.

If you get up and find she's already been, shift the alarm earlier. You want to try and get her out before she needs to go and does it anyway.

Would it help to crate her in your bedroom for now? She might settle better then and then you hear when they wake so you can get up and let them out. I’d also second keeping the door shut whilst toilet training and just take her out regularly.

If you crate her in your room you can slowly edge it towards the door and out into the hallway/landing over time.

Just sleep near her and when she stirs take her out for a wee.

Personally I would not set alarms - never wake a sleeping puppy is one mantra I do stick to!

The crate wouldn’t fit sadly :(

Crate games by Susan Garrett
Make the crate the best place ever, give it tonnes of value. Our pup slept loose with crate there but door open he also has a raised bed he just slept on that. With nothing he could chew. Except furniture, which he never touched. We had a pen too, so you could section an area off.
Also reward nothing, so when your pup is nice and calm gently and quietly praise him.
