My little Jack Russell, just over 6 months old..just hates getting up in the morning? As a very young pup he didn't mind but now I have to lure him out with a treat, he has a very cosy bed in his crate - maybe too comfortable! He is really active through the day, two good walks per day and very healthy and affectionate, loves to be with you or even better snuggling on your lap (he is really little even for a Jack and such a friendly happy boy, is this normal?

I’ve only ever had one puppy, all our dogs have been rescues, but she was like that too. She used to come to work with me and I had to practically carry her to the car and take her breakfast with us!

Bless him! My JRT is exactly the same - albeit he's older now. As someone is home all the time I don't 'get him up' I just let him surface when he's ready. Jack Russell's do love their blankets! What time are you getting him up op?

icedcoffees · 23/09/2021 06:50

What time are you trying to wake him?

I have to turf my beagle out of bed in the mornings - he'd stay there until lunchtime if he could Grin

Our current (alleged high energy breed) dog has, since a tiny pup, woken up around 8 for a pee, poop and breakfast (all completed in under 5 minutes). After that he returns directly to bed and snores his head off until lunchtime. I guess they are just not morning people!

My 4yo is still like this. She goes for a wee in the morning and then comes up for a cuddle in my bed with me. She has to be dragged out at school pick up time.
As babies they sleep / play / sleep / play.

Not all dogs are super excited about leaving their bed in the morning. We have a basset hound and our morning routine involves gentle waking followed by physically getting her up for a walk, or she'd never get out of her bed.

Girlintheframe · 23/09/2021 07:11

Our dog isn't keen on mornings. We are generally up around 6.30 but he will sleep later if left.
Even once he's up he he will doze on our bed, have breakfast then ideally doze till around 10.30.

My border terrier quite happily sleeps until lunchtime. Have to drag her out if I want to walk her in the morning

BSky · 23/09/2021 07:21

Our high energy breed 4 month puppy is the same. Surfaces between 8-8:30, sometimes later. Pops to the garden, breakfast then finds somewhere comfy for a rest. Livens up from 10:30. Will nap in between walks & play & takes herself off to bed at night around 9:30. Getting her to the garden after 10pm is a complete inconvenience to her and sometimes just a no go.
I had just expected 5-6am starts to the day but we busy around her crate from 6:45 getting ready for school and work and she just snores away 🥰

vivainsomnia · 24/09/2021 10:00

A other one who's never been keen in mornings. I assumed he was awake quite a bit at night and so wanted to sleep when we were up but that's not the case. The only time he's been up and ready for a walk was when it was really hot.

Otherwise he doesn't care for a walk before lunchtime and usually sleep until then.

Hi All, thankyou for the respones.
Pumpkin: I try to get him up just after 7am.
I guess I'm learning from these posts that it is not unusual to have a dog that just doesn't do mornings! Grin
Strange for me as my other boy was always an earlybird, but then I was getting up for work at 5.50am so I guess he got used our routine, at the weekend he would pace the hall if we slept past 7!
This little chap also puts himself to bed at 8.30pm some nights if he has had a busy day ( read worn us out Grin).
Perhaps at 6 months he might also be a 'teenager' in dog months/years? and teenagers dont like mornings usually..
Your posts definitely put my mind at rest...and made me smile, thankyou x

My friend has a dog who won't go out when it's raining, won't get out of bed before 10, huffs if you are up after 9pm and takes herself off to bed in disgust Grin

Tropics4 · 24/09/2021 18:53

@Notmycat
That is hilarious! My last dog, lived to almost 18 and the last year or so of his life really didn't want to go out for the last wee at 10pm, I literally had to scoop him up from his bed, he would then pur like a cat all the way to the back door and only properly wake up as I dumped him at the threshold telling him in no uncertain terms what was required...we both knew he just wanted to be carried out and it became an almost nightly ritual, but he was very old and deserved the extra bit of fuss/encouragement.

My 5 year old labradoodle loves his bed. Quite happy to sleep from 9pm to 9am, have a pee and breakfast, then settle on the sofa to sleep until lunchtime. He's incredibly high energy in the garden and on his walks, but in the house he's a snoozer!
