Initial costs

Can anyone help me roughly work out what I’d need initially for a new puppy and how much money I need to put aside.
I’m thinking things like bed, bowls, crate, puppy pads ect plus things like injections and first months insurance.

I’m thinking the first month and the build up. So not necessarily neutering and ongoing costs.
Do you need to pay to see a vet straight away?

Well you don’t want puppy pads, they just make housetraining take longer.

Also they should come with a months free insurance, but how much it’ll cost to take out a new policy depends on the breed, anything from about £30 to £60 a month isn’t unlikely.

Vets visit, vaccinations and flea and worm treatments, about £100 ish, depending on your vet.

Crate - depends on size and availability, I was trying to get one a few months ago and if you didn’t want a small one then they were stupid money.... but usually between £20 and £100 depending on size and make.

But bed, bowls, toys, harness and lead... about another £100 isn’t ridiculous... could manage it cheaper if you needed to, but could also easily spend more than that.

Personally I would budget around £300-£400 for initial costs.

Insurance
Vet visit, vaccinations x 2, flea and worm treatment
Collar, lead, maybe a harness
Bed, crate, maybe blankets for snuggling under
An ID tag (this is a must have by law)
Food, chews (as puppies chew everything)
Bowls
Poo bags
Pet enzyme spray to clean up any accidents
Harness or crate for car travel - they must be restrained by law.

It doesn't sound like much when written down, but costs add up really quickly. You also need to budget to replace the items your puppy will inevitably destroy!

Training! If this is your first puppy book in a 121 before you get the puppy and or the next few weeks. Start right and you will find things so much easier.

If you sign up to a vets health plan you will not have a huge bill for fleas, vaccinations etc but it will be between £11.00-20.00 per month.

Also add in any costs of puppy proofing your house and garden. Wires all need to be concealed, shoes off floor on a rack/cupboard garden needs to be secure or your pup will escape.

Toys can cost a lot.
Good quality food around £40 per month... Best to get some in first.

Toys and chews can easily stack up in cost. If you need to leave the pup alone in the early weeks then you might also need a sitter.
