Lovely puppy aged 7m.

Is normally an excitable little chap, likes people coming to the house, loves being made a fuss of. He’s a bit jumpy at first but usually after a couple of ‘command’ phrases/treats/garden time he calms down

OMG he just went nuts with my parents… wouldn’t calm down, kept getting on the sofa, really really mouthy and bitey. They were doing all the right things and weren’t encouraging him. I’m now a bit flummoxed as to how to manage him. I had a friend round this morning and he was great with her!

Any tips? He’s usually allowed on the sofa so wasn’t doing anything ‘wrong’ by getting up, it was the scrambling and mouthing that was the problem

He sounds overwhelmed and over-tired - two lots of guests presumably means he's been awake most of the day?

Puppies need 18-20 hours of sleep a day, even at seven months. I doubt he'll sleep while you have visitors, but you could encourage him to settle in his bed or crate with a nice chew (pop him on his lead to stop him getting up all the time).

Thank you IcedCoffees

Yes you’re right, he was probably overwhelmed. You could tell he was just super excited to see them! In a way I think if they’d made a fuss and got that bit over with, he may have settled quicker? But I get that they don’t want a puppy jumping all over them trying to nibble 😳

The lead is a good idea. I need to find a decent chew for him, everything I’ve tried so far disappears within minutes! Is he too young for a bone of some sort?

Most treats are fine over the age of 12 weeks - ostrich bones would be great for a puppy as they kind of have a honeycomb texture so they're not as hard as other types :)

I would try and encourage calm before he gets attention - so he should have all four paws on the floor before he gets any fuss from guests - it's easier said than done though! My beagle is four and he still likes to jump at his favourite people Grin
