Oh, tell all! We are going on a doggie date with a prospective greyhound rescue tomorrow.

Hi OP,

We are 6 months in with our girl and are more obsessed with her every day. Like you when we got her I knew they slept alot in theory but in reality they if there is. Nothing better going on she sleeps. And in the funniest positions too.

Congratulations on adopting your lovely grey. You have so much fun and joy to look forward too.

plominoagain · 18/09/2021 22:49

All the time . 23 hours a day if you let them . Usually right across your sofa ….

tiddlysquat · 18/09/2021 23:04

I've been struggling as she won't walk (freezes). So I just decided mid week to keep her in unless we have other doggies to walk with. Have also got an adaptil collar and plug-in. And its made me relax a bit more just giving up on the walks.

And since then she is just SLEEPING. Perhaps it's because she is relaxing into our home now. She will come and potter and lie in the sun at lunchtime if I go and do some gardening , she's always in the kitchen like a shot if I open the fridge- but apart from that she's sleeping. At 730 she's out for the count - at 9 she is wondering why we are still sitting on her bed ...and this is without any walks!!

Is it a hound thing? I know a Basset just like this.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 19/09/2021 10:34

My dogs (greyhound/deerhound crosses) are like this

They DO need walks though 2x20 mins is enough, but ultimately they absolutely do need exercise

They are also a very sensitive breed, so your new grey is probably still exhausted from settling in

Aren’t they just gorgeous dogs though 🥰

2000lightyearsaway123 · 19/09/2021 12:06

Hi OP,

I just saw your update about walks. Our girl was like this at first. She came from somewhere rural and where we were walking her was a busy road. She would refuse to walk, freeze etc

We started small just walking her around the little quiet green outside our house, encouraging with some treats and lots of praise as we went. And we slowly worked our way up. If she likes the car maybe try different locations.

Brollywasntneededafterall · 19/09/2021 12:11

You need a bigger couch op!!

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 13:15

Yep I absolutely plan to walk her - but she's big and I can't force her. Hopefully she'll settle and will want to walk soon.

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 19/09/2021 13:35

Yes, they need time to bond and learn to trust you. Even getting the dog to come and walk to the end of your street and back is a start Smile

That’s literally how we started with my old girl. It took time for her to grown in confidence, but once your grey trusts you, they’ll listen to you (with gentle encouragement)

Mine used to just have to sit down for a few minutes every time a car passed as it was so intimidating to her

You’ll get there

tiddlysquat · 19/09/2021 13:46

Thats great @MarleneDietrichsSmile thanks for the encouragement. I've been driving to somewhere I can park right by some grass, away from houses, so at least when she freezes I can just stand there without feeling so conspicuous! We just took a few days off and she definitely does seem more settled and relaxed. Meeting a friend mid week with her dog , might try it on my own again after that.

She's just enjoyed a massive snuffle box I made her with an old Amazon box - and has zonked again.

I’d take it as a compliment. She doesn’t want you to take her away from her new home in case she can’t get back to it.

Just don’t start patting her when she does it as your reassurance that it’s “ok girl everything’s fine, you’re a good girl” type stuff translates into “I’ve stopped here and mums patting me so it must be a good thing to stop so ill make sure to do that a lot daily to please her”.

So tonight dd and I are perched on each end of the sofa with ddog sprawled asleep on between us. We said we'd never do this .....

Owner of five adoptees here.

Age range from 2 to nearly 10

I can confirm they are the laziest dogs ever Wink

They are also the most affectionate and calming ever.

They eat loads and poop loads but they are the greatest.

We call them house giraffes. Grin

We often sit on the floor

AnnieJ1985 · 19/09/2021 19:58

We are 6 weeks post adoption of ours, and he loves snoozing. Short walks suit him fine, we have a lot of work ahead of us to train him (hopefully!) not to pull and bark at other dogs, but apart from that, half an hour round the park twice a day and he is happy. We have another rescue too, a much smaller unidentifiable mix, who we thought wouldn't be able to keep up with his long legs, but they actually walk at similar pace.

I had to get a 2nd sofa

Brollywasntneededafterall · 19/09/2021 19:58

No ddogs allowed on our sofa either op...

DominicRaabsTravelAgent · 19/09/2021 20:06

Looks like you've got them really well trained Brolly Grin

Brollywasntneededafterall · 19/09/2021 20:40

Tbf that is their couch. We have one upstairs... But... It was that biggish one. Replaced it with a smaller one. They were so puzzled when they realised only 2 fit on now!! Felt quite guilty..

mummabubs · 19/09/2021 23:09

People don't believe me when I say ours sleeps 20 hours a day! It's part of the reason we chose a greyhound as with myself and DH both working during the week it meant we could pay for a dog walker to come and give him a decent walk and then he literally sleeps on the sofa in the sun the entire rest of the day and only wakes up when we come home 😅

thatfuckingtent · 19/09/2021 23:50

This!

MarleneDietrichsSmile · 20/09/2021 07:01

60MpH couch potatoes, is what they get called Grin

tiddlysquat · 22/09/2021 21:06

Just had to come on here and say as I was stroking her to sleep tonight (she's an early nighter like me!) I had a little heart bound and I think I am finally starting to bond with her, slowly slowly . We've had a really good day today together. She still freezes quite badly but it's improving VERY slowly . I even left her for an hour with no issues at all (checked camera). She slept....
