Kong question!

My greyhound is 32kg so I got her the xl kong

She puts her bottom jaw inside it to eat and has to really wrench it out. Is this right or should I try her on the next size down so she can't do this ?

Try her on the next size down. My dog uses his tongue to get what's at the bottom, or he bounces it around the floor to shake out whatever's in there.

Oh will do, think I'll start from basics and maybe stick some apple and carrot in there and block with dog peanut butter so she learns to empty it rather than stick her jaw in? I was freezing her wet food inside .

My puppy bounces it too, they’re so clever! I don’t think they should be able to get their jaw in there so I’d size down. I’d be worried about him getting it stuck!

I would definitely size down. She shouldn’t be able to get her jaw in. It’s a pointy hound issue - it makes sense that they need the XL because of their size, but then their needle noses mean they have slender lower jaws than other dogs.

@PermanentlyDizzy thank you I hadn't even questioned it until dd said today it looked wrong. Do you think I should get her jaw checked? She's had it 3 times and has done this each time .

I'll try her with the smaller one and just put things in she can empty out initially so she gets the idea

@tiddlysquat Unless she’s showing any signs of discomfort eg not wanting to eat, her jaw is probably fine. I would worry more about her getting it stuck in the kong.

My Lurcher loves his kong wobbler treat dispensing toy. Only problem is your skirting boards take a bit of a hammering! Grin

You might find the toppl may work. It is slightly easier than the kong for some dogs and is a different shape so may be better suited for a pointy hound.

Brilliant thanks I'll look at both those, I have the smaller kong as bought it and then worried it would be too small, so I'll try it on her tomorrow
