Whining whippet

Does anyone else have a whippet that seems to whine for no reason? He's been for a long walk; he's been fed and still has some dried food left in his bowl, so can't be hungry; he's sitting next to me on the sofa and has had a fuss; back door is open if he wants to go out.... He whines a lot and most of the time I just don't know why. I like to think I'm quite tuned in to animals, so it frustrates me that I don't know what's wrong. When I went to view him and his litter mates when they were young they were all whining and I asked the owner what was wrong and she said they whine all the time. Is it just a whippet thing? I've not had one before.

How old is he? Could he need a nap but doesn't know that?

CMOTDibbler · 16/09/2021 16:55

At this time of year, I'd put a coat on them and see if that deals with the whinge. My salukish lurcher does a lot of whinging, and for him temperature def has a big part to play in it!

BrennieGirl · 16/09/2021 16:56

My lurcher boy whines a lot. If there's clearly nothing wrong, I just ignore him. I think it's a sighthound thing.

OldWivesTale · 16/09/2021 18:25

He's only 6 months so maybe it is that he's tired but can't settle to sleep perhaps?

I don't think it's because he's cold because it's been really warm here today.

Yes, I'm wondering if it's just a lurcher thing.

When mine was that age he didn't know when he needed to sleep, he really did need to be put down for a nap in the way that a toddler does!

My pup whined/barked
Don’t give him attention. So unless it’s walk, food, toilet time etc if he’s whining ignore him so he learns that he doesn’t get attention for whining. I wouldn’t just leave the door open. Make sure that, at 6 months he’s sleeping plenty 18/20 hours for young pups.

Three greyhounds here - can definitely say its a sighthound thing. Like a baby, if he's fed, walked, toileted and warm, then let him whinge for a bit. The older mine have got the less they do it but still have a good go on occasion!

Have you got a ballet for them to get under. My friend needed whippets and has had several. They all only settle if entirely covered, including head, by a blanket!

Sleepyhungryfattyanddoc · 16/09/2021 22:33
