What breed to get?

I’ve been dog broody for years now and I’m finally WFH permanently, and youngest DD is 6 so have more time on my hands.

  • Standard 3 bed semi
  • Medium garden
  • Semi rural and coastal - lots of open spaces, very dog friendly area
  • DC aged 13/11/6

The only breed I have any experience with are KC Staffies. My Uncle had two sisters that I used to spend weekends dog sitting as a teenager, my Grandparents had one just before I was born and then another when I was 18, a few years after my childhood dog died, my sister has one.

A close friend has a naughty PITA but gorgeous and charming Beagle, another has a batshit but gorgeous and charming Cocker.

But I’ve never owned or trained one myself.

I’m 5”3 so don’t want a large dog.

Money not an obstacle, have several good vets nearby, am also willing to wait a year or two for the right breeder - please tell me what I’m looking for in a breeder, they will be KC but still want to go in with cautious and critical eyes

Border Terrier. We have a 5 month old and she's just fab. Really fun personality, absolutely adores kids, small enough for them to be able to handle. She's got stacks of energy for when they're around and for walks, but she's very happy to snooze on the sofa having her tummy rubbed. They're a healthy breed and don't shed or require much grooming. Cons... recall can be tricky due to prey drive and stubbornness.

I wouldn't get a spaniel or a collie. Spaniels are batshit energetic. Collies are obsessed with balls or work of some kind, absolutely single mindedly obsessed.

Just chipping in to say yes check you can find a vet, I just rescued a dog and planned to go to either of two recommended vets for the breed (greyhound ) but both were full. I was just lucky that the vet I had for my cat (who died last year), counted me as a client still (no doubt due to the £100s I spent with them in 2020!) - but they had also closed their books to new clients .
