8 month old pup breathing fast?

I have an 8 month old mixed breed rescue dog who arrived from Bulgaria a month ago. She is very nervous out of the house, (which we're working on), but fine indoors - playful, affectionate and loving. When she is lying down her breathing rate seems to be exceptionally fast and her breaths are very shallow. I took her to the vets on Tuesday for a puppy check, where I mentioned it to the vet. She checked her heart and lungs and said they were fine. She didn't seem concerned and said all puppies breathe fast. She also said it would probably slow down when the weather cooled down, which it hasn't.
In all other ways pup is fine - eating, drinking, normal poops and wees. Plays happily in the garden and has mad zoomies in the evening. But I just find it worrying to listen to her breathing. She really hated the vet and doesn't like the car much either, so I'm reluctant to drag her back there if they're not going to do anything. Anyone had something similar?
Ps. She does seem to dream a lot and gets quite agitated in her sleep when she does - don't know if that's linked?

It is very warm weather at the moment OP and my dog breathes so fast and heavy on a hot day! Doesn't seem to stop. If you have already spoke to a vet and they are sure the pup is fine don't worry. Just keep an eye for any changes or if the weather cools and this is still happening maybe call the vet and let them know but fast breathing is so common for dogs in warm weather.

Sorry, just to clarify, it has cooled down here today, (mid 60's and drizzly), but her breathing hasn't slowed down. Just realised I phrased that really badly!!

Agree with pp, if the vet has checked her out she should be okay.

It's very early days for her it might be she still a bit stressed and needs time to feel fully relaxed.

As a first time owner, the first time I saw my dog dreaming I thought she was having a fit: legs twitching, muzzle in a snarl, chest rising and falling rapidly and the oddest little whimpering noises. Scared the life out of me.

Is she breathing with her mouth open and panting?

You can count her breaths per minute . I would not worry if lower than 35 breaths per minute. If over 40 I would speak to the vet again.

Have you ever had other dogs to compare her behaviour to?

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 10/09/2021 18:37

Yes, we've had dogs all my life, but mainly older rescues - never had a pup this young. She's not panting, no - sort of huffing through her nose.

Just to add, we're currently having playtime in the garden and she just laid down, (on her chest and tummy), to watch DD on the trampoline. Her breathing looked totally normal, so it just seems to be when she's laying on her side and going off to sleep/sleeping.

Is she a brachycephalic breed?

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 10/09/2021 20:07

No, she's a real Heinz 57. Looks like a border collie mainly.

My dog breaths really fast at times when resting and then other times really slow but normal for a dog.

He has check ups every 6 months at the vets and nothing has been flagged up for breathing so I just assume it's normal variations.

Creamcrackersandricecakes · 10/09/2021 20:42

@BiteyShark - that's reassuring, thank you!

Yes, just noticed my dog this evening while she was lying asleep on her side.

Every so often her breathing gets quite fast.

Just wondering if they get a bit warm, breathing gets a bit faster and that's when they might get up and move to a cooler spot.

Happy to report breathing bang on at 32 breaths per minute this morning. Fingers crossed it's just natural variations/puppy excitability/dreams!! Thank you everyone who responded Smile
