Patio sticks of dog wee!

Sussexmidwife · 09/09/2021 10:28

Any suggestions appreciated for how to solve the problem of having a small garden (patio & borders) and a retriever. I am rather attached to both (!) but they are a dreadful combination.
The sandstone patio seems to absorb the smell of dog wee however soon I rinse it off. Have tried scrubbing with bleach, using an essential oil based spray on it, but it still smells. On sunny days it is even worse.
Any other ideas?

Jeyes fluid is good. That's what I always use, but my dog goes on the grass now. It was only an issue when he was a young pup. Hope that helps 😊

Another vote for jeyes fluid but sadly it's not a miracle, and there will always be a slight whiff of dog pee!

We used to use cheap bio laundry liquid. Dilute and sling it out to sit over night then hose off before he went out in the morning.
Jeyes is good but never really gets rid of the smell I found.
New girl won't wee on concrete 🙄

I agree with the bio laundry liquid, works a treat. We first used it inside when she had puppy accidents and it really does remove the smell. She always used the grass at our old house but at this one decided to use the patio for some reason, upside is we don’t have so many dead patches on the lawn!

As its sandstone which is porous you may need to seal the slabs to prevent it being absorbed

Hoppinggreen · 09/09/2021 12:31

If it’s porous then yes it might need to be sealed or the pee will soak in
I use a zoflora that is especially for pet odours

Simple Solution Patio Cleaner

Mixed reviews, but carpet/floor cleaner is really good, so I would think it’s worth a try.

I keep a watering can of diluted dettol to wash down any wee etc seems to work ok here .

PermanentlyDizzy · 09/09/2021 13:36

Also heard good things about this brand, which comes in different scents, but haven’t tried it myself.

Dilute bleach in cold water, apply with watering can, leave it for half an hour and rinse off thoroughly. If you have vertical surfaces around he might be peeing up these, so slosh up them too. Our garden wall takes the punishment here, plus our camouflage pattern lawn...

Virkon is amazing - neutralises smells and disinfects everything. A tub isn't cheap but it lasts for ages.

Sussexmidwife · 09/09/2021 20:23

Thank you for so many suggestions. I think I’ll start with the bio laundry liquid & go from there.

Bio liquid or a good dousing of Simple Solution (Wilko do their own cheaper version) an enzyme solution that will break down the urine stink. Leave it have a good sit on the surface before good slosh of water to wash off.

I’d forgotten all about Virkon. Not seen it for years. We used to use it to wash down our yard when we first had dogs many, many years ago!
