16 week old won't walk....

We have a puppy that's 16 weeks old.

If I take him for a walk, just by myself he refuses to walk. Just sits down, or lays downs.

If we go out with DD he is happy to walk.

Today I ended up carrying him to the park 🙄

Does anyone have any tips?

This will pass very quickly (soon you will be on here asking for advice for pulling on the lead Smile)

I would go to quiet places and do carry your puppy for some bits of the walk. Sometimes dogs are happy to walk back when they have relaxed and got used to the environment.

Do not exposure your dog to many different things at once , go slowly at their pace and they will soon get more confident in the outside world.

How old is your DD?

Perhaps frightened take some tasty treats and hand feed as you go along, don’t drag etc lift and sit on a bench and watch the world go by I hand fed mine kibble and a few tastier bits so he was concentrating on food if there was anything with the potential to be scary he wasn’t really interested because he was eating. Perhaps harness or lead/collar is annoying - I really worked with getting him used to his collar and harness played in house with it on, fed whilst on played in garden and took off and on let him sniff etc, it’s all a huge huge learning curve for puppies once they can get out. You need to balance socialisation with not overwhelming/flooding your pup with too much information. Then once home they need time to sleep and process all they’ve seen and done, ready for the next outing.

They only need 5/10 mins out so carrying them is an option unless massive - golden retriever for us so couldn’t do it long. He would lie down so we’d change route or go home and do a different route the next day or go in the car etc.

She's 5.

We only go to the same park for our walks. So he knows the way now and knows where we are going. Once we get there he is fine, it's just walking down our road he refuses!
