My greyhound has been eating plums from my garden ... 😰

Hi,
I have a grey and he is a big boy. 40lbs.
My short plum tree has been growing plums and others in the house has seen him eat the fallen plums and now he has 'upgraded' to plucking them from tree as I saw.

This is our first time dog owners so I just googled about dog and plums and it looks horrifying .
He has been doing it since 2-3 weeks now and is ok but now I am terrified because apparently plum pits have cynide in them 🥺...
Please help.
He is just going on normal as I type but I am
So scared.

My black lab does this every year and has lived to tell the ‘tail’….

Wbeezer · 01/09/2021 17:22

The plum pits go through his gut whole though you'd have to crush the pit/stone and chew up the inner nut to be exposed to cyanide and to have to eat loads, he'll be fine. I'd mainly be worried about loose poos, and it's supervise him in the garden /pickup allthe fallen plums of i were you.

Mumincloud · 01/09/2021 17:33

Thankyou @Tronkmanton and @Wbeezer... positive side comments

I am now asking my son to just clear all plums on the tree ( no fallen ones as my dog already ate them :( and thus started plucking)

I want a plum now.

PigletJohn · 01/09/2021 18:00

When he gets his mouth stung by a wasp, he may stop.

PermanentlyDizzy · 01/09/2021 21:04

My old girl used to do this with our greengages. She’d gather the ones that had fallen, then get up on her hind legs and start picking them off.

We used to build a temporary net fence around the tree, go out first thing to pick up the windfalls, go in the garden with her to supervise whenever she was out there and do a massive harvest as soon as they were ripe.

She never had any ill effects from them, but I did worry about it all the same.

My current old boy will snuffle about for windfalls, but can’t get up to the branches to pick them, so we just clear the windfalls every day and we’re always out whenever he is anyway.

This year we have a really cute squirrel that runs down the fence, shoots up the tree, picks greengage and swings upside-down to eat them. He’s hilarious and has almost stripped the entire crop by himself. Grin

2 summers ago my husky ate a flip flop!!

PainterInPeril · 01/09/2021 21:24

@Brollypackedforscottishholiday You win! Grin

Goshitstricky · 01/09/2021 21:41

We had a dopey ass German Shepard when I was growing up, his name was Fagin (named after the character in Oliver Twist)

He was huge so would get on his hind legs and pluck knickers off the garden washing line and eat them whole (until they got stuck hanging out his bum!)

Not the point of your thread OP but it made me remember him and gave me a smile.

Mumincloud · 01/09/2021 21:49

Thankyou to all who are replying...
@PermanentlyDizzy.. yeah I am going to do that now on...pluck them before he does!
@Brollypackedforscottishholiday Shock

Our golden retriever used to eat all the manky plums that had fallen off the tree. She'd then walk around pooping and vomming up plum stones only to repeat it a few days later(!) 😅
Our greyhound on the other hand has eaten a million things that we've been sure will bring about his demise - 200g Belgian chocolate, a chocolate orange, spicy sirloin steaks, an entire chicken carcass... The list goes on 🤦🏻‍♀️ I swear greyhounds have the most intense stomach acid! I'm confident yours will be fine but if they start being sick or behaving oddly you can always call your vet for advice 😊

Thedogshow · 01/09/2021 21:55

Our lab does this too. I think labs must have some extra lives like cats when it comes to food though. They eat everything.

WinoAnon · 01/09/2021 22:00

Mine has gotten into the wash basket and eaten so many of my knickers and even eaten the arse out of my jeans and shorts on occasion. I've put it down to pheromones rather than that I hum Confused

I bet your hound looks adorable picking them off the tree. I'm sure she'll be fine!

toomuchlaundry · 01/09/2021 22:07

We had a lab who used to do that, including jumping up at the branches to try and get the ones she couldn't reach! No ill effects, although I was glad I was too young to pick up after her!

Mumincloud · 01/09/2021 22:24

@mummabubs ... the stress probably will make me another 'grey' (head)around the house 😮‍💨
@Thedogshow... that would be helpful.. few lives to count on Grin

my jack russell eats my tomatoes off the plants,

LeafOfTruth · 03/09/2021 09:27

Happy memories. Our old Jack Russell used to sneak and eat the blackberries off the bushes as we walked by. You'd get home and the side of her face would be stained purple from all her scrumping Smile

My friend's dog used to climb on the coal bunker to reach the higher plums. He pooped the stones out whole without any problems.

Sitdowncupoftea · 05/09/2021 12:35

I have a plum tree my dog eats them also they have a go at other fruit in the garden too I wouldn't worry.

OmgIcantbelieveshedidit · 05/09/2021 12:52

Mine are currently eating the many many cooking apples and it is not doing them good. I’ve just been around with the green wheelie bin and collected a bin full and they are now eating them off the tree. Shouting is ineffective so I might fence it off.

theliverpoolone · 05/09/2021 21:46

I had a pup that swallowed a plum stone and when I contacted the vets they made me take him in so they could get him to vomit it back up.

I would definitely worry 😳 A friend’s dog died in surgery after a plum stone perforated its gut. Friend has no idea where DDog picked it up from, certainly not her garden. Beware.
