Is a gradual pup separation better?

All going well, we will be having a puppy from a close friend we see often. When puppy is old enough, should we take it away for a few hours, then back to mum, and do the same over a few days/weeks? Would this be better for the mum/pup or are there things I haven't considered?

Nope much better to take the puppy at the appropriate time and then keep it at your home.

Do allow a lot of time to settle in your puppy eg sleep near you at night.

Taking the puppy backwards and forwards is not recommended.

@PollyRoullson-thanks. Would a gradual removal be more stressful/confusing to the pup then?

The puppy won't settle properly in your home if you keep returning him to the breeder and letting him play with mum/littermates before removing him again a few hours later.

It's much easier to just take him at the appropriate age/time and get him settled in your home alone.

We had our pup from a friend and had him home for a couple of afternoons R 6-7 weeks before collecting at 8 weeks. Well once we were given the wrong pup 😂.

Worked fine and he settled pretty quickly. Think would anyway as quite a chilled pup.

Continued to pop back to play etc and still do at 2yrs for family walks etc. It’s grand
