Advice re puppy in the garden- how to enclose?

Morning all

Pup arrives in 6 weeks Smile. We’ve got a very large shared garden due to the nature of our job, but we do have a seperate area which is just ours where I intend to take pup out mostly. The problem I’ve got is whilst it’s quite secluded it’s not enclosed on every side (but is enclosed on the perimeters- I just don’t want him having such a huge space- I want him on just our area especially at night time).

I could put a temporary fence up (to last the first year or so) but not sure what would be best to use? It has to be temporary though as we don’t own the area. Would you try and fence it or would you buy an outside puppy pen and then as he gets older take him out on the lead?

Do others take pup out on the lead -especially during the night? Or just let them wander? Obviously when he’s tiny he won’t be able to go on the lead.
Nobody else uses our area and no dogs etc on there so he should be ok to go on it without second lot of jabs?
Hope that all makes sense and any advice appreciated!

Our puppy's breeder made a run out of heavy-duty metal railings that she bought in sections and then clipped together. Suspect they were pricey though.

I wouldn't worry about taking the puppy into the garden even before first jabs - so long as any other dogs using it are vaccinated you should be fine. Diseases carried by foxes and rats can pose a risk but it's really important that the puppy gets outside and is exposed to all those experiences - different surfaces underfoot, seagulls screeching, whatever.

Yes, out on lead.

I don't think there's a 'too young' to introduce a lead, is there?

I've used temporary fencing to section off a bit of my garden. It's electric fencing but I haven't attached it to a battery of course. It just sticks in the ground on spikes and then I use pegs to secure the bottom so pup can't go under it. Working well so far!

We bought an outdoor puppy pen and it's been a great investment. Late night toilet visits were very easy to manage; she was tiny and very easy to lose in the dark.

We still use it occasionally if we want to keep her nearby but safe whilst doing potentially dangerous garden chores like strimming.

Our puppy went out on the lead until he was about 3-4 months old. It also massively helped with toilet training as it meant he couldn't get too distracted with other things!

Your puppy will be fine to go in the garden as soon as he gets home, please don't worry.

If your pup is only going to be outside for short peirods of time and you are going to be close at hand would this type of tether work for you ?

RSPCA's advice on using them does say that they should not be used for young dogs but I think as long as you are with / near your pup they should be ok

Slightly different but I have a house cat but so he can get some fresh air and chase flies ( his goal in life Confused ) I use a retractable lead with my washing line threaded therough the handle , can you do the same for your pup ?

I found with my puppy we made a makeshift removable puppy pen out of pallettes and an old gate which really helped him get used to the space (and made it so he didn't tear up the whole garden) and then once he got used to the space and was a little bigger we took it down and used a tether pole so he didn't startle our other garden users! I'd also recommend this course if you've not owned pets before. We only took this recently because my DD wants to have a little bit of responsibility for our animals now she's getting older, and found it super useful, and it's all online so if you have little ones and can't get out a lot its good lol it's by BusyBees (the same people that run the nurseries) busybeestraining.co.uk/e-learning/first-aid/pet-first-aid-e-learning

Thanks all some really helpful advice! I was worried wouldn’t be able to take him out on a lead in our garden so soon but looks like I might aswell try as soon as possible. I’m going to try and make an area secure too so I’ve got the option of putting him in the area too - fingers crossed.
Thanks everyone and am sure I’ll keep asking other questions!

If it's grass watch his pee doesn't burn it. My now 2 year old dog flooded the lawn as a pup and you could actually see it turning yellow after he pee'd. He ruined an entire lawn.

I got some of this when I wanted to temporarily fence off a veg patch from a puppy and it worked well. You could set it up as a pen or enclose an area around the back door possibly.
