Any tips for helping bitch through her first season?

Our bitch has come into season. She's our first female dog and I'd like to get it all right for her. I've ordered her pants but I'm not sure she will keep them on!

We didn't use pants, we found her really clean. I don't think they should be used for a long period of time anyway, best to let air flow etc! We only bought them as we were visiting a friend during that time and didn't want any drips there, but tbh we barely noticed any at ours.

We found she struggled to get comfortable, normally she spends a lot of time on a blanket on the floor but she was visibly not happy with that, this was when we gave up the no dogs on the sofa rule.

We also found she went off her food but we're advised to not give in to fussiness. We didn't and it took a good month after her season but she's back to loving it.

The only thing we weren't prepared for was she got really zoomy and mouthy several times a day. It quickly passed!

Obviously don't walk in areas busy with dogs, I would advise always on a lead. We stocked up on enrichment toys given she was having less walks. Some say early/late walks but she was always asleep so we went at the usual time but stuck to streets rather than parks, and kept an eye out for dogs.

The mouthy bit is interesting as she's started mouthing visitors much to my dismay as she's not small. I'm literally following her around with a mop so we need some sort of solution for the bleeding.

You will be able to get her spayed about 3 months after first season so at least you and her only have to go through it once Flowers

Why isn't she sterilised?

Ours have both been fine with the pants as long as I've put them on and distracted them straight away with toys/treats. Didn't leave them on all day, just when they were pootling about to save splashing everywhere.

@dizzylizzy08 We are hoping to breed as many pups as possible from her then dump her at a rescue centre. 🙄

I actually found the season far less of an issue than I thought it would be with my bitch. She was quite restless and struggled to get comfy for a few days but that was about it. I'm hoping it is the same with my pup when she has her season. Pup is a larger breed so I am undecided if she should have one or two seasons before her spay - may just see how bad she is when it's her turn!

When mine came into season just before she was due to be spayed, I felt she was probably feeling similar to me with period pains etc. So, apart from scoffing chocolate, I pampered her as I would like to be pampered 😆 She looked so lost and confused, bless her

I was worried about a season, but actually it was fine. I think ymmv, though! Tried to up sniffing games and kongs, that kind of thing, as she couldn't have runs off lead as usual. And just walked her in as quiet places as I could find. Dogs seem to have reacted to her still, even 2 months down the line, so be aware it may go on for a lot longer than you think.
