Bed chewer!

Does anyone have any solutions for a very sturdy dog bed? We have an anxious pooch that chews his bed (and de-stuffs it) over night. He is a rescue and has always done this despite training, sleeping with us etc etc. He also likes to chew blankets which we will happily provide him with a ready supply but dog beds are expensive and the constant clearing up of stuffing is exhausting! He only does this with dog beds and is not otherwise destructive. It seems to be his way of self soothing and I'm happy for him to have a chewy blankie. Just need to find an indestructible bed solution (either bought or home made)?

@Fifilafrog Our lab has destroyed every bed and blanket we've ever bought him. We've bought him a rug off Facebook Marketplace for £5 and although he's chewed bits off it, it's still going strong nearly a month later Smile

Thanks for the tip. Rug isn't a bad idea actually as he's more than happy to sleep on a rug in the evenings whilst he's with us so why not over night I guess? Just feel a bit mean him not having a "proper bed" ☹️

@Fifilafrog When we got rid of our crate (he'd stopped chewing indoors by this point so could be left safely), we'd left his crate tray on the floor but he preferred sleeping on the floor. I felt awful for him but we just couldn't afford to keep buying new beds for him. He destroyed a £20 one within 8 hours of him having it! The rug is perfect for him :)

Vet bed is very good, I deal with a lot of dogs and chewers have a solid thick plastic dog bed with some folded vet bedding in it for cosiness.

Our lab does this and we've been through several beds and countless vet bed pieces. We've been told Tuffies are very good but they are expensive so will wait until he's fully grown and not sleeping in his crate overnight and carefully transition him over to this (I'm saying this with everything crossed). We've had a bit of a breakthrough this past week with an old flannelette sheet on our leather sofa that he now settles on relatively peacefully but we do immediately nip any attempted chewing on the bud - he's always got chew toy to hand for us to redirect this behaviour. He's very good during the day on his coolaroo bed - with supervision! Had one chewy incident but with some heavy darning thread at least the whole bed wasn't rendered dodgy for him (ie spilling it's tempting to eat fluffy guts out). We've got a coolaroo at my dad's house that he loves to sleep on, too. He has got a soft bolster bed but the temptation to chew is so irresistible to him. I worry about him eating the stuffing so it's used with supervision only at the moment....

Same! He's an angel all day, it's just overnight. Even with his chewy blankie to hand! He's still relatively young at 3 years old so I'm hoping he'll grow out of it 🙏🏼. He was slow to house train too. Bless him, it's a good job we love him 😂😤🥰

Very good job (I mutter under my breath as I sweep hair and ostrich bone bits up from under his coolaroo for the third time that day) Grin

@Fifilafrog @bingohandjob Can you recommend any good chew toys?! He loves the scooby dog squeak ball from B&M. We removed the plug thing so it becomes a treat dispenser, add his kibble in it and that keeps him busy for 10 minutes in the garden.

Our pup does best with chewy rubbery toys that are hollow, if that makes sense. We quickly found he ripped anything stuffed apart and he doesn't seem to get a good enough grip to destroy the rubbery hollow ones - similar to Hol-EE Roller toys. We get ours in TK Maxx in all shapes and sizes. He also enjoys a good gnaw on his kongs and after several months of use they are still like new! He's also had a Kong dotz since day one and again, like new despite HOURS of abuse! www.kongcompany.com/dog/play-type/chew/dotz-circle

Loves Yak chews and ostrich bones and they last a good while.

He also loves his Tug E Nuff toys for strictly supervised short high energy games. Very good to train some self control too - he has to sit and wait before grabbing and learn to drop it when asked. We've also got two of the same toys to do a straight swap training session with him so he learns to let go of things and he doesn't lose out! tug-e-nuff.co.uk/blogs/news/top-toy-picks-3-of-the-best-toys-for-retrievers

Tuffies do some that are hard to chew due to design.
