Male puppy peeing outside

yesiatethesweets · 22/08/2021 20:57

We are due to collect our male puppy in a few weeks. We have only ever had female dogs before and put back garden is completely paved. This was perfect with the previous dogs and made cleaning up easy but I know that male dogs will lift their leg to pee rather than squat. Any ideas of how to encourage peeing on a particular spot rather than all over the plant pots?
I had a look at the patio/balcony patches online but they are quite expensive for essentially just a piece of grass!
Thanks for your help!

Apologies for the spelling mistakes! Can't find my glasses and can't be arsed getting up to look for them!

Buy an old lanp post from the council.

Our male dog never cocks his leg in the garden , although he does on walks , in the garden he just stands and pees . My sisters last male dog never cocked his leg at all ever .

I'm of no help but my wonderful Ddog was very creative when it came to toileting. Not wees though. He would find a single leaf in the middle of a huge lawn and deposit on it. Some poor maintenance guys had the joy of him pooing in one of their tool bags (to be fair, I wasn't with him that day, a friend had taken him out!). The best one I ever saw was when I'd moved into my new house. He discovered a planter in the garden, reversed up to it, put his back legs up on the edge of it and did a huge poo right in the middle of it! I do miss that old stinky dog! Enjoy your pup OP!

Thanks, will wait and see how he gets on as it might not be an issue at all.

We can't wait to get him, we lost our other two dogs earlier in the year from old age, within a few weeks of each other and the house just doesn't feel right without a ddog!

Ok, so now we've got toileting out of the way, where are the photos & what breed is he?

yesiatethesweets · 22/08/2021 22:00

He's a hound. Don't have any pics yet but will come back to update when he's comes home.

My miniature dachshund male squats like a lady when he pees, so maybe you'll get lucky and have a similar pup! One time he cocked his leg and I was nearly crying with pride, but it's never happened since

CrumpetandSausage · 22/08/2021 22:27

6mth old ddog squats to wee. A couple of times this week only he has semi cocked his leg. Not sure at what age they learn to cock their leg?

OnlyToWin · 22/08/2021 22:32

Male dogs tend to wee like female dogs (squat) until they mature and then start cocking their legs. Our dog does a mixture of both now. He cocks his leg approximately 900000 times on walks and seems to prefer to save up his wee for these times!! He will wee in the garden and sometimes squats but always at the edge of the garden and prefers to have something to lift his leg against. He tends to wee in the same 3 spots as the scent draws him back. I think having a pot or something that he could lift his leg against would be useful to have.

OnlyToWin · 22/08/2021 22:34

You might find that he starts to wee against your fence.

Shapesorted · 22/08/2021 22:36

Our male dog squats.

m0therofdragons · 22/08/2021 23:43

Our cocker still mostly squats at 14 months. He only cocks when the grass is long and tickles his bits.

MrsRobbieHart · 22/08/2021 23:46

My boy never graduated to leg cocking in his whole ten years. Other boy dogs laughed at him. He didn’t care. Rebel. Grin

ErrolTheDragon · 22/08/2021 23:59

My dachshund has never cocked his leg, the previous one rarely did.
They do like to mark though.

Try to train your dog where you want him to go - that might entail thoroughly cleaning any wee off pots or paving you don't want him to go on, and then put the cleaning cloth in the right place to scent it. (You can get deodorising sprays). Same as you would do for house training really.

BiteyShark · 23/08/2021 05:08

Mine has never cocked his leg and doubt he ever will now he is almost 5 years old.

icedcoffees · 23/08/2021 09:49

Our beagle squats in the garden but cocks his leg on walks!

I presume it's because no other dogs come into his garden.

Tinkerbellfluffyboots79 · 23/08/2021 09:58

My old retriever peed squatting his whole life, never cocked his leg. Current retriever squats for a long pee but does try to cock his leg on walks if we walk too slow.

He ‘goes’ on concrete or stones. Old dog was ex guide dog pup who are trained to go on command so that’s taught from tiny with a cue word and reward also taken to area on lead. Have done similar with this pup so he’s not going on the grass. It’s easy enough to do.

I misread retriever as 'retainer' and assumed it was Your Majesty, again!

Oops There goes my gong! Blush

Our lab pup wees in the same area on command in the garden but now he's nearly 8 months likes to do a tiny wee at about 4689 different spots along his walk route. Still squatting. He's attempted cocking his leg once at 5 months, wobbled a bit, and hasn't since.

bingohandjob · 23/08/2021 19:25

Forgot to actually answer your question. We've sectioned off a little "loo run" area for our pup at back of the garden, half paved, half grass using a low level fence/edging (only about a foot tall) and walked him to this area each time until he got the hang of it and now he happily trots down there. Hose it down regularly. Not stinky even in high summer (all 5 days of it).
