Puppy waking in the night

I have a 15 week old dachshund. She's doing really well apart from one thing! If she wakes in the night she yaps and whines until one of us gets up, normally me.

We have an older dog, 7yr old springer x patterdale, who sleeps on the sofa and is no bother. So we been doing with the puppy exactly what we did with our other dog. She settles really well initially with no problem, but if / when she wakes in the night then she yaps and whines. I've tried leaving her but she literally wakes the whole household.

I'm exhausted, and don't know what to do with her next!

Are you not taking her out to the toilet when she makes a fuss? At 15 weeks she's very young and probably needs a wee!

Assuming you take her out to the loo when this happens?
My 16 week old wakes most nights between 4 - 5, we take her out, she does both pee and poop and then runs back to bed for more snoozing.

Yes, I take her out. But then she won't settle again unless I sit down!

Last night, I got up at 1am and went back to bed at 2.30am as she wouldn't settle. Then 15 minutes later dh get up to the loo and started her off again!!

She’s still quite young to manage holding her bladder all night. If she usually wakes up around 1am could you start pre-empting this and get her up and out for a quiet, boring loo break at 12:45? Then you could slowly push the alarm further and further as she gets older? If she doesn’t wake herself (and everyone else!) up barking then she might settle easier too?

It sounds like she's struggling to be on her own, even though your other dog is around.

Have you tried having her in your room for a while? Or crating her? Some dogs feel much safer in a covered crate - maybe include a t-shirt or something that smells of you for comfort.

Every dog is different. She may just not be able to cope alone yet.
