Do the mums ever seem to miss their puppies?

It’s often repeated that by the time the puppies are 8 weeks old the mums will be glad to be rid of them, but is this your experience?

I'm not a breeder but I've seen a few bitches with litters and yes, by 8 weeks they have had enough. I remember one jumping up onto a picnic table in the garden to get away from them.

Our breeder kept the puppies until 12 weeks - I have photos of my boy curled up sleeping with his mum and littermates the day before we took him home!

They've not met since so I'm not sure if they'd remember each other though.

An 8 week old puppy is like a twenty something human you live them, but they need to be making their own way in the world.

My dad used to breed Whippets, bu the time the puppies were 8 weeks, Mum would run a mile!
However, they would still initiate play with the puppies- so it's a mixed bag.

I think most of the running away has to do with sharp teeth & claws when they try and feed off mum...

My girls are never seem bothered when their pups leave . We keep mum with her puppies until 10 weeks . The first 4ish weeks mum and pups are kept in our bedroom by themselves ( with us obviously) and then we bring them downstairs to meet the rest of the pack . Then mum and pups all mix with our others dogs until bedtime when pups go back into their whelping box and mum can go in and out . Mum is present to meet all new parents but I put her out when the pup actually leaves . Luckily I’ve never had an anxiety problem.
We’ve had mums keep pups and others where all pups have gone . They really don’t seem out out at all Grin

No, it's more like a 3yr old child who feels vulnerable and will cry loudly if it feels as it's protectors have abandoned it. It's physically tiny compared to the adults and it still has baby teeth.

It's not even and adolescent, far less a young adult.

Don’t be so ridiculous! No wonder so many people on here struggle with their puppies if this is what they think. 8 week old puppies require round the clock care!
