Peanut allergy...

We suspect our Labrador mix might be allergic to peanut butter. She has broken out in red rashes, bald spots (&balding around her eyes) and scratching a lot. Anyone got any experience with this? We thought it was fleas or mites but she has neither of those.

Has she seen a vet to rule out parasites, skin problems, dermatitis, behavioural etc and to get her something for some relief from the scratching. If they think it is an allergy they can recommend an appropriate diet but I wouldn't jump to that conclusion myself. Obviously stop the peanut butter if you have suspicions but she still needs to see a vet to check her out.

@WeAllHaveWings yes seen by a vet and basically told it COULD BE food related 🤨

Definitely a vet check. Could also be an allergy to an ingredient in their food or environmental allergy.

If they didn't do anything other than say it could be food related without giving advice I'd go to another vet.

There is a sweetener in some
Peanut butter that is bad for dogs, could it be this?

icedcoffees · 15/08/2021 15:45

Is the peanut butter you're using 100% peanuts?

This ^^

Are you able to check the ingredients to see if it mentions xylitol?

icedcoffees · 15/08/2021 15:56

In the UK it's highly unlikely to be Xylitol, and if it was, it would have put the dog in the vet with severe liver damage.

The side effects of Xylitol consumption in dogs are seizures, low blood sugar, liver damage and death.

xoJellyBean · 15/08/2021 16:50

100% peanuts
No xylitol

Is there anything that's changed in her environment since you've given her the peanut butter?

PollyRoulson · 15/08/2021 17:12

What is the vet planning to do about the symptons?

Have they recomended any further tests or skin scraps etc?

boohhooy · 18/08/2021 13:17

Check for palm oil, that's not good for dogs either, but won't it be ok if you don't buy any homemade dog treats and stick to dog stuff?

Beamur · 18/08/2021 13:20

Our vet suggested taking piriton. Ddog had seasonal allergies. Mostly showed up as ear irritation and fur loss.
Also switched to grain free/low allergenic diet ( which she didn't like at all)

AdventuresDownRabbitholes · 18/08/2021 15:09

I'd give the dog a couple of weeks off peanut butter and see if things improve. Then give the dog a bit of peanut butter and see if issue reappears at that point.

If it doesn't go away / doesn't reappear after the peanut butter, I'd be looking for an alternative cause
