Dog Spay Advice

My 3 year old small dog is getting spayed on Thursday. She is having a laproscopic spay so should have a quick recovery (hopefully). Her op has been cancelled a couple of times but we are determined it is going ahead this time (cancelled due to a broken leg, badly times season, covid hitting, another season and the vet getting covid).

Does anyone have any advice for how to make her recovery as easy as possible?

We have her favourite treats (roast chicken and salmon) ready in the freezer (yes she is very spoilt!).

What is the best cone of shame? Is it worth getting her a vest? I have a couple of weeks off work anyway to help her relax and recover as I'm a childminder and she wouldn't not play with the children!

I can't see the pic but be assured that the whole point of a laproscopic procedure is that it causes very little damage and she will be absolutely fine and back to normal within days. My girl was racing around again the next morning. Enjoy your time off with her!

Pic is showing now, what a cutie!

That's good to know. We are hoping to have a short trip bank holiday weekend to visit family (its my birthday) but wont book a hotel or anything until we know she's ok.

And thanks, she is adorable although when she is shaved short she thinks she's a football hooligan and struts around like shes a rotty 🤣

Mine had laproscopic spay and I'm not sure she noticed. 2 tiny wounds which she didn't lick so we didn't use the cone and dissolving stitches so just sent vet a photo 5 days later and no appointment. Hope it goes just as easily for your girl.

She’s a little sweetheart.
Just try to keep her as quiet as possible for the first few days. No running up & down stairs or jumping on furniture. Do you have somewhere she could be confined & quiet while you’re busy with other things! A crate or play pen? The vet should provide you with a collar. If not you can get softer things now rather than the hard plastic cones, often better for small & low to the ground bigger breeds who can both trip over the collars. Mine, low breed , were provided with a sort of stretch baby grow thing.

Ours is in for her laproscopic spay as we speak - nervous! The vet said recovery will be short and she can be back to her normal routine after two days - I'll keep you updated!

Darklane · 16/08/2021 16:18

I expect they’ve probably phoned you by now. Hope you can pick her up soon so she can come home to be spoiled rotten for a few days Flowers

Our lovely girl is back now - groggy and a bit disgruntled, but ok so far.

@Glenthebattleostrich Ours has no stitches and I can't even see the incisions where they went in. No cone of shame - someone had lent us a surgical suit, but I don't think we'll need it, as there's no wounds to bother her really.

rbe78 · 16/08/2021 16:35

Though here’s a pic of her trying on the suit pre-surgery - she was not very impressed!

I used a post op suit from Amazon as my little cavapoo could not cope with the cone of doom. She looked like a little Superdog 🤣Vanansa Dog Surgery Recovery Suit for after Surgery, Dog Recovery Suit Protect Puppy Wounds After Surgery for Male/Female Dog, XS, Blue www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B08QF4F1M4/ref=cm_sw_r_apan_glt_fabc_2D3FNQX4GYK1E6AHTXTN?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

@rbe78 how is your girl today? Hope she has recovered! She is absolutely gorgeous.

Thank you everyone. I'm very nervous about it still and dreading Thursday but good to hear how quickly they bounce back

@Glenthebattleostrich

Still very tired (though she's a greyhound x, so tends to sleep a lot anyway), but hungry as ever and doesn't seem to be in too much pain.

Might try her on a very gentle walk later, as she hasn't had a poo yet, and prefers to go in the park next door to our garden.

Glenthebattleostrich · 17/08/2021 19:52

glad she's ok. The poo thing is worrying me as she has certain spots and if she's in a strop with us will poo under DHs desk 🤣

@Glenthebattleostrich That's brilliant - ours doesn't like arguing, and once went upstairs (not allowed) whilst we were having words and peed on the corridor floor in protest!

Ours is totally back to normal, and even went on a run yesterday evening (we kept a careful eye on her to make sure she wan't in any pain, but as usual, she was keener and faster than us!). We did pop her surgical suit on for it though, so she didn't get any dirt in the scars.

Hope your little girl's op goes ok today - I'm sure she'll be fine!

Glenthebattleostrich · 19/08/2021 10:04

Just had a call from the vet, all done and shes walking up 😁

Apparently shes a little character (thats the polite way of putting it!)

Vet is very happy, all went perfectly and we have a very healthy dog. thought it best not to mention the bacon sandwich and cup of tea she will be having when i get her home!

We pick her up at lunchtime, cant wait for a cuddle.

Glad your girl is better @rbe78
