How much does your dog bark?

Trying to gauge how normal our dog's reaction is to visitors.

Female, spayed, 1yo. Rescue from abroad, we got her just as the major lockdown hit in December/January so we were only able to properly socialise her in the house from April/May, plus not regularly due to lack of family and friends in the area. She barks every time people come to visit, for a long time, and only calms down once she's went on a walk with them.

She also barks on behalf of her sister who is a more recent (and very scared) rescue dog, as she's protective of her. We're trying to work out how much of her behaviour is normal, and if socialisation classes would help as this doesn't happen outwith the home - just in the house or garden.

Thanks in advance!

Ours barks when someone entered his 'territory', so basically when ever we have visitors.

Indoctro · 14/08/2021 07:48

7 month old Staffordshire bull terrier and he only barks if playing with you. Never barks at visitors or door going.

Immaculatemisconception · 14/08/2021 07:52

Ours barks when the doorbell is rung, which is great. That’s pretty much it.

RoseDog · 14/08/2021 08:01

8 year old staffie, only barks if we are playing with a ball or teasing her with treats. Does not care one bit when someone knocks on the door or even just walks in...useless guard dog!

icedcoffees · 14/08/2021 08:05

3.5 year old beagle - every time someone knocks on the door, but as soon as they come in he stops.

If it's a delivery (like an online food shop) i pop him behind the baby gate with a biscuit or something to keep him quiet.

Could you try meeting people with her outside - at the end of the road for example, and all come into the house together?

GoodnightGrandma · 14/08/2021 08:06

I’ve taught my dog ‘shh’ so she knows when to shut up.

MrsBungle · 14/08/2021 08:09

18 month old poodle. She barks every single time someone comes up the drive. She does a scooby doo run on the spot and runs to the front door. If it’s someone coming in she stops as soon as they’re in. I’m not having much luck training her out of it. Bloody annoying when the postman or a delivery comes and she leaps up almost giving me a heart attack.

Hekatestorch · 14/08/2021 08:09

Ours barks if you say 'what's that' or she sees a cat in the garden. That's it.

I would start, like pp said, meeting all visitors out in the street with her and then going in together. If you don't feel confident that you can do this with a support look at getting a behaviourist in. I am sure the rescue will be able to assist with finding you one.

Si1ver · 14/08/2021 08:11

Doesn't bark at all. She can and when she does she looks really surprised.

larkstar · 14/08/2021 08:13

5yo springer spaniel - never once heard her bark in any situation in or out of the house.

MayorGundersonsDogRufus · 14/08/2021 08:16

We have an anxious 18mo rescue Labrador cross. He barks at strangers and a lot if someone strange comes into the house. We have found putting him on the lead and keeping him close by us helps to calm him down when strangers are around and he doesn't bark. If he's loose he just works himself up.

bunnybuggs · 14/08/2021 08:16

mine barks when the door knocker is knocked - just one short bark which is not repeated even if I do not immediately rush to the door.

She loses interest in any more barking.
It is lovely and I do sympathise with people who have yappy dogs that react to a loose leaf in the garden.

DustySpringboard · 14/08/2021 08:16

Ours barks too much-as with a pp dog it's when when anything/anyone invades his territory which includes pigeons and crows sitting on neighbours roof-sends him up the wall!

People walking past 'his room' can set him off as can the neighbours opposite parking their car, dustcarts, posties and window cleaners. Luckily we live in a fairly quiet cul de sac.

LivingLaVidaBabyShower · 14/08/2021 08:17

Ours barks at the doorbell but is fine when guests come. She somehow knows tradesmen are tradesmen and barks almost relentlessly even when they feed her a snack 🙄

Postman gets it in the ear each day and we get a good round of barking if people come too near our front door or linger and chat loudly on the road.
She also hates the creepy alcoholic man opposite and barks her head off when he is parking his annoyingly large van.

Mollymalone123 · 14/08/2021 08:22

Ours bark a lot at home-territorial- and it’s part of their ‘watchdog’ which they were bred for.We found that if we walk in or others do and to totally ignore them -no talking for a couple of minutes-it stops a lot faster.otherwise if we have people come in and say ‘hi’ and they are greeting us and the dogs in excitement it ramps it up.We want our dogs to bark at the door or portential intruders-but not incessantly

FawnFrenchieMum · 14/08/2021 08:23

Ours also a rescue but UK not abroad, goes nuts every time the door bell goes, barks and runs around frantically. We’ve tried alsorts to calm him down with no success.
He will also bark at visitors for a while. He calms down once they are in and sat down but will start again if they stand up.

kindlyensure · 14/08/2021 08:24

Honestly? Never. A whippet. If someone comes to the door/visitors she rushes to greet them and races around a bit and wags her tail, but no noise. I guess that's the equivalent of her barking? We ask visitors to ignore her, we've taught her settle and stay and she does calm down pretty quickly. (Throw treats or kibble away from door as a last resort! (She's 10 months).

17CherryTreeLane · 14/08/2021 08:33

Ours barks at anyone coming onto our property, which I actually quite like. Was very useful recently when some teenagers were mucking about in our front garden in the middle of the night.
Once people come through the door, he stops though. Never barks any other time.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/08/2021 08:37

2 year olds lab.
Barks a very low scary sounding bark if he is spooked in the garden in the dark, but that's it.
Not reactive to the door etc.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 14/08/2021 08:39

Oh I lie. He also does the same scary bark (which makes him sound massive) if he hears a particularly strange noise in the night.

I also think if he found an intruder he would do the same but he wouldn't do anything else

SprayedWithDettol · 14/08/2021 08:42

Mine barks to go out for a wee if I haven’t noticed her standing by the door - which is rare as the door is always open. She also barks at hot air ballons. That’s about it.

simbobs · 14/08/2021 08:45

Seldom barks, and only if he sees someone through our hedge or gate and is unsure that we are aware of them.

NeilTheBaby · 14/08/2021 08:46

Whenever anyone walks past the house, when the door goes, when strangers they don't know enter the house, when they hear weird noises in the night. It's fucking annoying.
Plus 1 yaps to other dogs if she can't get close enough to say hello yet the other barks IF other dogs get too close so that's fun!
Other than that they're wonderful Grin

Karwomannghia · 14/08/2021 08:46

Boston terrier very very rarely. Other small dogs in wider family- constantly.

Iusedtobesoooomuchfun · 14/08/2021 08:49

Every time someone knocks on the door.
Everytime someone enters the garden.
But that's a good thing. He's supposed to be protecting us.

Every time another dog barks in their garden! I hate this. But training is going well. No barking at all yesterday. I now just say "good dog" when another dog begins to bark and he doesn't respond with a bark.
He does a rumbling noise before he barks. So I know it's coming!

He's 8 months old and still has balls.
