Concerns for neighbours dog

itsureis · 13/08/2021 23:53

My next door neighbours got a dog about 4 months ago. It's a big dog, not sure of the breed but looks like a big teddy bear.

Although we have massive gardens, I've never seen it, or them as it happens, in the garden, and they keep it outside the back door on the concrete driveway, locked between 2 gates. This is also where the dog does its business 🙄

The dog does have a shelter of sort although I don't know if he sleeps outside.

He cannot see out onto the road so whenever anyone comes near to the house or when I go down my path or to my bins, it barks loudly, continuously because he cannot see where the noise is coming from.

When he does this the owners come to the door to either let him in or to tell him to be quiet.

I feel so sorry for him just sitting there, and I've also seen him from my window chewing at the gate 😢

I've grown up with dogs and they were very much part of the family so I find the conditions he is being kept in very distressing.

Although the dog looks in good health and i've never witnessed any cruelty, i do wonder, did they really get a dog just for it to sit on a 12ft slab of concrete all day long ?! Am I being too sensitive and do people actually do that ?!?

So what should I do ?

Should I email my concerns to the RSPCA (they only want to speak to you if it's an emergency atm) or should I speak to my neighbours ? I don't know my neighbours as I only moved in 12m ago and they aren't very sociable. I'm not bothered about upsetting them although I'm not sure what they will say apart from telling me to mind my own business 🙄

Any advice from fellow dog lovers would be greatly received 🙏

Sounds like a chow chow is it that? I think some people buy them as guards dogs. Personally I'd let the rspca know. It doesn't sound like it's having the best life

Pinkpeaches · 13/08/2021 23:59

Hello, please do let the RSPCA know. This is no way for a dog to live. There was recently a case where a neighbour reported the cruelty to a dog in the next house and it saved the poor innocent animals from suffering. You are definitely doing the right thing, please help them and report the neighbour

WitchBaby · 14/08/2021 00:04

I don't think the rspca would do anything tbh, they're not very good in cases like this.

Poor thing Sad

Hekatestorch · 14/08/2021 00:08

Not sure RSPCA will do much as his basic needs are met.

You aren't sure if he is walked, or where he sleeps, he appears in good physical health, he is fed and watered. They let him in and out. RSPCA, as far as I know, don't say how much interaction dogs have to have or how much space each breed should have.

While I agree with you it's worrying and I don't think, the situation you describe is ok. I am just not sure they will do anything but it's worth a try.

Also not sure, if talking to them will do much good. They clearly, think these conditions are fine for him. They wont react well or change anything.

Maybe call the Council about his barking, if its very often. Its sad, but there's often kor much that can be done.

Thanks for the replies ....
I've been stressing about what to do for some weeks now - thinking that I'm over reacting and that maybe they were making the surroundings 'dog proof' but no.

I did think about asking if they were keeping it as a guard dog ?! If they are then it's working as I'm a little scared just going to my bins !! If only not to upset the poor thing ...

It's such a shame as the dog looks lovely. I'll message the RSPCA x

@itsureis I donate to the rspca each month so they send updates. They have recently emailed to say about a report from a neighbour led to dogs being rescued. The dogs sound like they are in the same condition these ones are in so please try and get them to come and visit at least x

itsureis · 14/08/2021 00:17

I will email the RSPCA but also when I see my neighbour I will say that I seem to be upsetting the dog every time I go in my driveway 😬
I'll be super friendly and make sure I have one of my kids with me so they don't tell me to f'off !!

@itsureis you will have to update us on here. I hope you can get something sorted for the poor thing

GingerAndTheBiscuits · 14/08/2021 00:21

Some of our small local rescues will go knocking on doors in situations like this - they’ve no real qualms about being told to F off and have experience at quickly assessing situations. That might be an option if RSPCA no use?

Pinkpeaches · 14/08/2021 00:22

@GingerAndTheBiscuits that's a good idea

itsureis · 14/08/2021 00:34

I will do ... I'm on a mission now as I've been thinking about it for far too long.

Thanks everyone x

If you are going to report to the RSPCA, Don't mention the dog to your neighbour, Unless you're not bothered about them thinking it was you.

itsureis · 14/08/2021 10:02

I did wonder about that .... but then it could only be me that knows about the dogs conditions so who else would make the call to the RSPCA ?!

It's tricky isn't it but seen as though the dog is still a puppy it could be living like this for years 😢

OP posts:
WitchBaby · 14/08/2021 11:13

If they think this is an acceptable way to treat a dog I doubt you talking to them will do any good but worth a go I suppose.

Where's the dog-knappers when you need them? (This poor dog being sold to a bloke down the pub would probably have a better life than the one it has now Sad).

wbgahw1 · 22/08/2021 09:07

Any updates

itsureis · 06/09/2021 19:10

Hello !
No updates unfortunately and the situation is still the same.

I've decided to speak to the lady of the house when I see her next. I will casually ask, in a friendly tone, How is the dog settling in ...?" And will wait for a reply before saying that I appear to be upsetting him whenever I'm in my drive ?!?

Some people I've spoken with don't think that dogs barking every time they hear noise is a problem as that just what dogs do 🤷‍♀️

Whywhywhy48 · 06/09/2021 21:03

@itsureis do they take the dog out for walks? This post has made me feel so sad.

wintercoffees · 06/09/2021 21:28

Have you reported them?

itsureis · 06/09/2021 21:51

I don't ever see them taking the dog out but they may do. I never heard it today and we were in the garden for most of it, so I'm presuming it was inside as they were at work 😕
I may be over sensitive and just thinking about when I had dogs as a child but it's still on the concrete, barking loudly at every noise it can't see which makes them get in and come to the door.

I decided not to report as it's not being mistreated as such, but I'll wait until I see them and ask how the dog is settling in.
I did see her this evening actually, and shouted over the hedge but she couldn't here me over the dog barking ... unless she chose to ignore me 🙄

Report them so professionals can make that judgment
