Our elderly (14) rescue has been assessed by the vet as in good health. He has some fatty lumps on his body and his back legs are weaker (sometimes he struggles to get up or stumbles) but the vet says he is in good nick for his age. He takes 1/2 paracetamol with meals as per the vet to help with any discomfort. However, I think he is “sundowning”. He sleeps all day and is up all night - pacing, can’t settle, panting, crying and occasionally barking. We used to have him sleeping on his bed in our room but can’t any longer as he keeps the whole house up. We have tried letting him sleep on the landing, on the couch in spare room and in the kitchen - always with the light on. Last night he peed in his bed - I think due to separation anxiety. He has not done this since we rescued him at 12 months old. I am wondering if it is time as I hate to think of him working himself up to such a state at night. He has always been a nervous dog but has become more so as he gets older. I am worried we would be making the decision to euthanise for the wrong reason i.e. he is disturbing everyone’s sleep etc. But also, I don’t want to leave it to the point that he is so distressed that he has a heart attack in the night! Or makes himself physically unwell. Our other elderly dog was euthanised 2 years ago and the decision was made for us as her back legs “went” one morning after breakfast. This is much more difficult as I am second guessing whether we are doing the right thing. He still has an appetite (more food focussed if anything) and has moments of excitement/ happiness. He tends to sleep most of the day, probably because he is so tired. Looking for some advice from others who have experienced a similar situation. Thanks in advance.
