Trouble getting dog's microchip number from old owner

Please can someone help. We bought a dog a week ago and the old owner is not co-operating in giving us the microchip details. We know the microchip is registered to her name and address as the dog was scanned at the vet when we took him for a check-up, but the vet won't give us the number because of data protection. The dog needs medical treatment but they won't do it until it's transferred into our name on the microchip. What can we do? Thanks for any help you can give.

Do you have proof that you actually bought the dog - a receipt for the money, or letters/emails agreeing the sale?

I can understand the vet being cautious, but the DP reason seems odd - if you bought the dog you presumably already know the previous owner’s name and address. Would the vet be willing to contact the previous owner and confirm with them the dog is now yours?

When I went through this issue the vet did give me the dog's microchip number and which company it was registered to (but couldn't tell me who he was registered to - data protection - it seems successive owners had failed to re-register his chip Hmm)

I had to send off a form to the microchip company who wrote to his last known address and gave the previous owners 28 days to object (they didn't) so he was registered to me.

I'd find a more helpful vet tbh

You should be able to get the micrchip number that is not a GDPR or data protection issue. Check again with your vet. You then go to change details and the old owner is contacted to allow it to happen.

I agree with the above. The chip number is just that and they're not breaking DP by giving you a number you can't do much with.
Our vet gave us ours, we sent it to the rescue who then sent us a link so we could re-register her to us.
Our local lost dog lady has a scanner - I'm sure you can buy them so in theory anyone can read the chip and get hold of the number.
I'd try the vets again. Or try another practice.

You can buy scanners yourself. They are not very expensive (£25-50).
