New puppy- best things to buy? Bedding?

We’re getting a border collie in 8 weeks time- just been born so no photo as yet as not chosen which one - will post when we have though! Smile

Am getting a list together of what to buy and trying to not get carried away so what would you recommend as essentials other than the normal stuff like bowls etc?

I’ve seen people talk about vetbed/ fleece but not sure what would be the best bedding for the puppy when it first comes? The breeder will send a bit of their bedding but what would you suggest? We’re attempting to use a crate so the idea is the bedding etc will be in there?

Thanks all!

We got :

Bowls
Training lead
Identification Tag
Lots of poo bags
Made an appointment at the vet for a check over and when we found out date of first vaccinations booked them in for their second .
Crate with a bowl that attached to the side so no spillages .
I also had a old handbag for dog walking that I use .
We used a short chain link lead to get her used to walking on a lead
I bought a tuffies raised bed which she loves was quite expensive but that will last her for a long time . Although maybe with waiting til you find out if she's a destroyer of beds
Spare old towels for when you need to dry them off
Puppy shampoo , for when they roll in horrible stuff :
Patience and lots of it .
Lots of chew Toys

We have a border collie. When a puppy he was a destroyer of beds, but not the one in crate, but that got ruined after 3 months of being dry at night, started pooing and weeing on bedding in crate overnight. Although it was washable bedding, I had to throw it away as despite being clean, it became a habit him soiling it each night, so I replaced bedding with cheap thin throws.

A roll of vetted is excellent. Especially for first few weeks when middle of the night wee accidents are likely and you are half asleep. Just take it out and put clean one straight down, comes on a roll and can be cut to size. Our breeder also recommended Lactol puppy milk to help settle at bedtime. Our puppy loves it!

We use brass slide tags on our dogs' collars, rather than hanging tags. They are much less likely to get lost (we went through a lot of hanging tags, but have never lost a slide one). If you are the suspicious type and worried about dog theft, you can just have your phone number and 'other info on reverse' on one side, with your actual address hidden against the collar. This way no one you meet can casually read the tag as they fuss your dog.

The ones that are just a piece of brass with holes will slide onto a buckle collar; for clip collars, you can get ones on a stretchy plastic fitting.

Vetbed is very good, especially for a puppy. Good that the breeder is sending you a bit of bedding with the familiar smells on. Once you need to wash that a good idea is to wear one of your old woolly jumpers, or T shirt this weather, for a couple of days & then give it to the puppy as bedding. It helps with bonding & helping him feel he hasn’t been abandoned at night The old standby of a ticking clock can help, bit too warm for a warm hot water bottle though.

This is a bit shameless of me but I have a brand new crate with fleece bed bit to sell. We overcrated! It's in it's box ready to go. I also have a good sized puppy pen and quite a few other bits. I am near a big airport in the SE. We have a collie. PM me if you are interested. I do recommend a heartbeat lamby (can flog you that tooSmile). Puppies LOVE a cardboard box so don't go overboard on beds - fleecy blankies and an old pillow will do. Collies like the floor - ours has many beds and is mostly found on the floorboards!

Something for the car like a travel crate is pretty essential.
