Cockapoo won't stop chewing..

My 1 year old cockapoo chews everything and I'm at my wits end. Poor DC hardly owns a single toy that doesn't have teeth marks in it. I'm due another baby soon and I'm so worried he's going to chew her stuff too that will inevitably end up on the floor.
Will he grow out of this? What can I do?

Cocker + poddle = both gun breeds. Both bred to enjoy having things in their mouths. Chewing is parr for the course with both these breeds. This is why breed choice is as much about what you don't want as what you do want, in a dog.

Keep everything you don't want chewed out the way. If you find him chewing something he shouldn't, swap it for something he can.

Most eventually grow out of it - but not for another year or so. Even then expect to provide a variety of things the dog can chew.

A few don't grow out of it.

Additionally, if you think he's chewing to entertain himself - a possibility - because he's not getting enough enrichment, Then also look to add that (walks, training, sniff games, etc).

Both breeds are also pretty clever and lively so require a fair amount of interaction each day. Not always easy if you already have children and one on the way.

Our spaniel chews A LOT we give him ears (pigs, goats etc) camel skin, yak chews, kongs and lots of toys. Doesn’t stop him picking up socks and teddy bears but it keeps him off the furniture etc.

We have a lab puppy and he stays in a playpen when he isn't being actively played with, trained or exercised. He has chews/toys in his pen but isn't allowed to roam.

My cocker spaniel needs to chew - but, aside for a couple of tea towels, he's stuck with "legal" chews, however he gets through a lot.

Favourites include bull pizzles, "no hide" (faux rawhide) bones & sticks, plaited buffalo chews, veggie antlers, yak chews and great big munchy stick things from Pets at home. Costs a bomb but keeps him away from my furniture Grin

Our puppy book says dogs need to chew for up to 4 hours a day, either give them things they are allowed to chew or they will find their own.

humptyspartyhat · 10/08/2021 21:12

Thanks everyone. He's chewed a lot of my underwear lol so I've learnt I literally can't leave any dirty washing within his reached but DS is only 3 and he just can't enjoy playing with his toys as if he drops any of has them out the dog takes them and chews. Going though his toys 90% of them are chewed and I feel so sorry for him and guilty Sad I'll go to pets at home and stock up on chews for him x

What are veggie antlers?

AwkwardPaws27 · 10/08/2021 23:28

Polkadot we get them from a pet store in a local garden centre but I think they are the same as these ones: www.petscorner.co.uk/great-small-vegetable-antler-chew

Chews are a great idea. But cockers and poodles need a lot of Brain games.

Its more important than physical exercise for them. Though that is obviously important as well.

A bored spaniel, is a naughty spaniel.

LadyCatStark · 10/08/2021 23:51

Does he not already have any chew toys or chews? If not then he will chew on what he can get hold of. Our puppy loves pizzle sticks and Yakkers best.

LtDansleg · 11/08/2021 00:02

He needs things to do. They’re an intelligent breed, if they’re not busy then they’re chewing. If you’re too busy to keep him occupied then you need to give him better stuff to chew than baby toys. I’m not sure how you’re going to cope with a toddler, destructive cockerpoo and a newborn!

This is the 3rd thread I’ve read on here complaining about puppy cockerpoos in under 10 minutes. I don’t know why so many people insist on getting daft crosses of working/hunting dogs and expecting them to behave well in houses with little to no effort.
icedcoffees · 11/08/2021 07:27

How much exercise is he getting and what brain work and training do you do?

Chews are vital for most young dogs but you have a cross of two highly intelligent working breeds who need a good amount of exercise (1-2 hours per day) and a need to work their brains.

So my advice would be to try a good mix of the following:

  • natural, long lasting chews or kongs you can stuff and freeze (do NOT buy anything rawhide)
  • snuffle mats and lick mats for feeding
  • slow feeder bowls
  • brain games - do things like chuck a load of kibble in the grass for him to sniff, or teach him the names of his toys, hide them and get him to find them. Teach him to tidy his toys into a box or bucket.
  • work on his training. Things like how to settle, to go to his bed, or even tricks like rolling over, high five, play dead etc.

Nina Ottosson puzzle toys are great too, especially if you are time-poor / don't feel up for making a boredom breaker / don't want to clean up shredded cardboard afterwards Grin
AwkwardPup has several, they are great for wearing his brain out & in the early months the only thing that gave me time for a cup of tea.

lancashirelady · 11/08/2021 08:05

I give our dogs marrow bones. Our dogs love them and spend hours licking the marrow out of them and then gnawing on the bone. They last ages are cheap and full of natural goodness.

icedcoffees · 11/08/2021 08:18

Mine figured out the Nina Ottoson games in about 60 seconds HmmGrin

I wouldn't waste my money again.
