Flipping CANNONS

Local saint's day here (non-UK), celebrated by letting off cannons - yes, actual cannons - for 10 minutes every 6 hours this week, and tonight is the big fireworks show.

Poor DDog is losing his mind with terror - he's gone semi-catatonic. I am totally unprepared - didn't know about this.

I'm playing that has lots of clapping in it to try and disguise the sound... any other quick tips?

What can I do?

There is a product thunder vest? Basically it’s a very tight harness for dogs. You could try to replicate that by putting the dog in a small sized t shirt.
Can you get to a vets tomorrow for a mild sedative?
We had a dog terrified of fireworks - she was ‘happiest’ in a very well padded bed, in a dark corner with a radio switched on. We used a space under the stairs. As sim as any loud bangs happened, she took herself to her safe space. We just switched the radio on and she was calmer.

Can you make a cosy den? A duvet or heap of blankets he can hide in ideally behind a sofa or under a table. My dog likes to get under and she seems instantly calmer.
Good luck, hope he settles.

Yep, he's in as much of a den as I can manage –he won't move from where he's frozen on the floor right now. He's just shaking and shaking...

Have wrapped him in blankets...

Poor boy. DAP plug ins are great but I think you'll just have to ride it out tonight.

You need to get your dog desensitised to the noise. It's not something you can do now as it's too soon but it's a yearly event so something to work on for next year. Maybe go to vets and see if you can use tranquillisers this year. If it's possible is there anywhere out of town you can drive to that's quiet.

He's 11 years old and has heart failure - I think it's a bit late for desensitisation, unfortunately –and even more unfortunately it isn't just once a year. They seem to let fireworks off to mark anything and everything around here and it drives so many of us nuts.

Would much prefer it if local government got their heads around the fact that this kind of noisy 'celebrations' are antiquated, unnecessary and anti-social both for humans and local flora and fauna.

They stopped after half an hour the other night, at least –but DDog now starts trembling at the sound of me switching on a lamp, so it certainly seems to have done a good job on him Angry
