Taking puppy out and about - toilet?

Jinnybean · 09/08/2021 10:30

We are bringing our pup home in a few weeks. Obviously she won’t be allowed on walks for a while but we want to socialise her as much as possible. What do we do about toileting?

We are also due to go away for a few days when she’s 13 weeks. Will she go when we are out on walks? How does it work? Haha

Thank you

She can go to the toilet in your garden even before she's had vaccinations - out and about you'll need to take puppy pads with you if possible - she should let you know if she needs to go.

Where are you going when she's 13 weeks old? She really won't be able to walk very far at all at that age so be prepare for your time away to be pretty restricted. We took ours away at 5 months and we were still pretty limited with what we could do - most holiday accommodation won't allow you to leave them unattended (some won't even allow puppies at all under 12 months so please double check before you go).

She should go on walks while you're away but many puppies won't and she'll still be having quite a few accidents at that age - be prepared for that and make sure you bring puppy pads and pet cleaner so she doesn't damage the cottage or caravan.

Good luck and enjoy Grin

She won't be fully vaccinated at 13 weeks though. They can go out 2 weeks after their second vaccine and the second vaccine is usually at 12 weeks. Are you going to carry her everywhere?

Most vets say one week after final jabs now - at least, that's what we did.
starbrightstarlight8888 · 09/08/2021 12:24

Maybe it differs for vets. I've got 2 11 week old puppies and mine is 2 weeks after the second vaccine.

icedcoffees · 09/08/2021 12:42

Mine was out and about with no issues at 11/12 weeks old. He had his vaccinations at 8 and 10 weeks and we waited seven days after his final jabs, when he was about 11.5 weeks old.

Jinnybean · 09/08/2021 13:23

She will be having her second at 10 weeks :)

We are off to Whitby so it’s really dog friendly and we normally just mooch round the shops and eat fish and chips.

:) x

She may not be happy on the lead and certainly won’t be able to walk far at that age.

Jinnybean · 09/08/2021 13:32

We won’t be walking far at all.

Will she still be small enough to carry when you go away? Whitby is great for dogs but I’d want to be able to carry a 13 week old if it was busy (away from clomping feet that don’t care about any dogs, let alone a puppy) and also so I could walk further than a 13 week old would be able to.

Jinnybean · 09/08/2021 13:37

We have a dog sling, also I’m sure my husband can carry her. We are only going for 2 nights so hopefully won’t be that bad :(

What breed is she? Will she be light enough to carry all day?

My concern with such a young puppy is it could be incredibly overwhelming and scary for them.

That sounds lovely. But a 13 week old puppy won’t understand walks yet. They don’t know about going in straight lines or staying out from underfoot and they’re not used to leads. In the shops it’s quite possible she’ll poo/wee as you won’t know their toilet if cues and won’t be watching her fully.

What breed is she? We had a carrier for our puppy when he was very small. Would she fit in a carrier?

starbrightstarlight8888 · 09/08/2021 13:47

Is she used to walking on a lead in your garden? Most puppies take a while to get used to a lead and won't be walking in straight lines at 13 weeks.
It's recommended that puppies ony have 5 minutes per month of age of walking up to twice a day so she won't be walking far.

Ahh, you’re sorted for being out and about then! Just be really, really vigilant where you are staying with the house training thing and have a brilliant time. Just think, in a year, you’ll be able to go back and walk her along the coast Grin
PollyRoulson · 09/08/2021 14:56

When you are carrying them out and about before their vaccinations keep the trips short. One so toileting is not an issue and also to keep things low key and stress free for your puppy.

I think going to Whitby at 13 weeks old sounds fab. If she is fully vaccinated toileting will not be an issue. Do be prepared to go back to basics re toilet training in a new location so you will need to be very vigilant in your accommodation.

Map in some time in the day for her to have some good sleeps. A mixture of being carried and mooching around will be fab.

Do watch out to check she is not being overwhelmed and if she is increase distance and retreat to a quieter location to watch from afar.

She'll be able to walk for about 15 mins, twice a day at that age. What breed is she?
Jinnybean · 10/08/2021 08:18

She’s a golden retriever :)

Thank you everyone!

We are so excited. I think Whitby will be quiet, we normally go every oct and it’s normally quiet. X

Aw people like to scare you on here, but it sounds absolutely fine and the puppy will be fine on a lead at that age. We had no issues putting a lead on ours. Also, it's good to socialise puppies at that age, so the more they experience the better.
