Puppy jumped the pen

puginamug · 08/08/2021 08:16

Came downstairs this morning to discover that my 14 week old cocker spaniel had managed to escape his pen.

He has a crate with a kind of 'extension' of a dog pen. This was recommended by the breeder as a sort of toilet area so we didn't have to get up in the night.

I'm guessing we need to dispense with that now and just make him go in the crate.

My puppy slept in her bed, in the kitchen (tiled floor) from day 1. I did use puppy pads because she had a very gippy tummy for a couple of weeks and they made cleaning up easier.
She is a rescue and although I have a crate she never ventured into it for more than a few seconds and I certainly wasn’t going to shut her in it. She’s turning into a happy, contented pooch, full of fun and very loving.

For the past 3 weeks she’s been clean day and night, no puppy pads because she enjoyed shredding them once she no longer used them!
In my experience puppy pads have a use, no way do they necessarily mean a dog that toilets indoors!

It stinks to leave a puppy to be unhappy and mess the floor.
It doesn’t stink to say don’t get a puppy if you won’t get up at night.

Aztec283y · 09/08/2021 14:51

Yeh, you keep trying to justify yourself. Time and time again you jump on these threads with your shitty attitude, passing judgement before you've even got the full facts . This OP has lost her child and you still have no shame!

Bortles · 09/08/2021 14:56

Just cover the floor of your kitchen with newspapers and let him have the kitchen. Wee outside last thing at night and first thing in the morning. Clear up soiled papers and lay fresh ones leaving one slightly weed on one nearest the door to outside. Over a few weeks decrease amount of paper until it's just the ones by the door. Also remember to take them out after every meal.
I never understand why everyone has such problems with toilet training. This has worked with every breed I've ever had. It's not torture. Just a bit of patience and not minding one or two misses. It's a baby.

Bortles · 09/08/2021 14:57

And cages won't stop them needing the toilet. It will just make them very unhappy and likely cry in the night that they have to soil their bed.

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2021 16:33

Please look at that group. Don’t use papers.
And it’s not shitty to expect people to give pets they’ve chosen to take on appropriate care.

@Aztec283y Please stop personally attacking Wolfie. Yes the OP has been through a terrible experience. But I don't think your insistence on focussing on that terrible experience, whilst attacking other posters who have rightly pointed out that she still has a duty of care to safeguard the welfare of the puppy she has chosen to purchase, is remotely helpful
Aztec283y · 09/08/2021 17:16

She's so rude to people! You can be concerned for an animal's welfare, you can point out that a poster has a duty of care in a considerate way without being so obnoxious all the time!

It's about time someone stood up for the posters that she belittles, if that means that I'm 'personally attacking' her then so be it and actually I do think what I've said is helpful. Maybe one day this board will be a kind, safe place that people can come to for judgement free advice.

I've said all I wanted to now.

OP, I apologise to you for derailing your thread. I hope you can get over this little bump in the road with your pup. I'm sure you will.

FergusSings · 09/08/2021 17:20

I agree with objection to the personal attacks, not helpful and Wolfie is rightly concerned about the welfare of the puppy. Op seems quite capable of challenging those she disagrees with.

puginamug · 09/08/2021 18:42

Thank you everyone.

Actually I did find the tone of some posters very hurtful. Most of you were helpful, thank you.

The point of this forum is help and guidance, not judgement and criticism (although I have been on here for 15 years so should no better).

Obviously I am concerned with my puppy's welfare and I'm angry that some have accused me of not being.

I have done lots of research and while getting up in the night is one approach, puppy pads or crate plus pen is another. You're entitled to your opinion over which one is better but certainly don't accuse me of neglect.

There's certainly no question of him not being toilet trained.

We've now got rid of the pen as it is a danger to him, and will try the crate alone, as my original post suggested. I'm certainly not going to refuse to get up if he needs to go out but initially choosing a method which prioritised my mental health was important wherever possible.

However the tone of some posters might well prevent people from asking advice in the future. It's worse than the baby threads!

Also, in my original post I didn't mean go to the toilet in the crate, I meant literally 'go in the crate'

So start your own thread if you want to slag posters off @Aztec283y (see how long that lasts!)

But please stop breaking talk guidelines and derailing the OP's thread for the sake of your own vendetta

You've contributed no constructive advice on this thread - just turned up to attack others and derail - you might want to think about taking responsibility for you own utterly inappropriate posts before criticising others

Glad you came back OP - please look at the Dogs trust link and also the FB group Wolfie recommended - they're both very useful resources.

Also please try not to be swayed by the poster determined to start drama - no one on this thread has accused you of not caring for your dog's welfare.

Good luck!

Wolfiefan · 09/08/2021 18:54

Honestly OP that group on FB is bloody awesome. We had a pup with separation anxiety and who took ages to toilet train. Their advice has helped me solve so many issues. It’s run by a positive force free group of behaviourists. Brilliant advice that works. Good luck.

StarfishDish · 11/08/2021 11:27

We just put puppy pads down for our pup (he had a crate but free roam of the kitchen). He has been fully toilet trained since 16 weeks old Smile

We never scolded him for using his mat but we did praise him. We praised him even more for going outside Smile

puginamug · 12/08/2021 08:34

Puppy has been absolutely fine in his crate.

He has one accident on the first night before I could get downstairs, and no accidents.

He settles much more easily in the crate than the crate and pen set up too.

Result. I just hope it continues.
