Pup doesn't travel well

Any tips? Our 6 months old puppy is sick almost every time we go out in the car. Please tell me this will get better - I'd love to take him to the beach, but it's an hour away and he wouldn't cope with the journey.

Speak to your vet. Cerenia is the magic drug. It is expensive but you often only need to give it for a couple of trips and many dogs are not travel sick again.

People suggest ginger biscuits, human travel sickness tablets , changing position of the dog in the car etc but cerenia is magic and works!

What breed is he?

Thank you @PollyRoulson! He's a labradoodle. I'll def speak to the vet - it's really limiting his experiences as he can only walk half an out at this stage.

Mine was sick every trip until about 8 months. He got used to it. I was also advised not to let him travel on a completely empty stomach so he had a little kibble.

We tried everything... dog was 9 months before he stopped just randomly no more sickness Now he loves a ride in the car

My golden retriever was also awful travelling until about 6-8 months. He’s fine now!

Thanks everyone- definitely gives me hope! I'll maybe stick to shorter journeys for the next couple of months, and cross everything that he grows out of it Smile

Adopted adult lab was terrible for about a year.
Things that helped:
-Empty stomach
-Short walk before hand
-Blacked out windows
-Keeping the car cool and windows down
-calm steady driving-he hated rouhdabouts

-Short drives to start with-10 minutes ish and build up

  • Take breaks on the drive

having another person in the car to put their hand in him if he was unsettled or if he started drooling which was a sign he was going to blow and the car needed to be stop and get him out asap!

Now he loves the car and happily sleeps.

Thanks for the tips @sillysmiles. Great to hear it can improve even in adult dogs.

Our poodle was SO sick as a puppy we didn't dare take her on any long journeys because I thought she could possibly become very dehydrated - and she got so anxious she wouldn't drink. We found she was better on the back seat with a seat belt harness, and we just did short drives to fun places for a walk. She stopped being sick at about 16 months, and is fine now.
I still have a pile of cheap fleece blankets in the car - they did sterling protection duty and wash and dry so quickly.
I have read that it's something to do with their brain growth and development, which is why it often goes away once they are fully grown. I never made an issue of it and she's happy to get in the car these days.

Definitely get cerenia - we used it for our golden retriever. He can now travel 6 hours without using it and not being sick. We used it for long journeys but also took short journeys without it.
