Which joint supplement?

My 5yr old dog is healthy but very occasionally gets stiff legs. Vet has given the all clear but recommended we start using a joint supplement and said suggested something that has glucosamine and green lipped mussels in it like Yumove. Is this good or is there a better alternative? Dog is very tricky with tablets so something powdery may go down better!

We use yumove. Have only just started though so can't really give an opinion yet.
What I will say is that they have a variety of different ones to choose from including one for senior dogs. Also if you do a subscription on line you get a massive discount and can alter/suspend it at any time.
We are still at the stage of giving a double dose (for 6 weeks) and is more for prevention for our dog.

Hi
I’ve been using yumove for about 5 years.
I gave to my chocolate lab ( now passed ) from when he was about 9 years old and it really made a difference to his mobility , we had a period with time we stopped it for him and within a week we noticed he was not running round so much).
I now use it on my 7 yr an 6 yr old spaniels and really helps both of them who each have had leg injury years ago.
I buy on Amazon on subscription as it’s cheaper, think a tub comes every 3 months.
Well worth it for them and can testify great results
Do not buy through the vets though as they mark it up hugely .

The strongest on the market is Riaflex Canine Joint Plus and Green Lipped Mussel the best there is in my opinion. Use it on all my working dogs and agility dogs

Scattyhattie · 07/08/2021 10:54

Riaflex is in powder form & suggests higher levels than competitors.

Info on supplements
caninearthritis.co.uk/managing-arthritis/diet-and-nutrition/

Canine Arthritis Management have a wealth of info on website and Facebook groups . If prefer a more condensed way to learn how to manage arthritis they also set up 2 owner courses cameducation.teachable.com/p/home

I'd also consider looking into a veterinary physiotherapist to assess your dog as are great at pinpointing issues and treating to free and building up any weak areas. The symptoms you do see such as stiffness can be like tip of iceberg as simply aren't aware of the more subtle signs to have noticed them Blush.

I haven't used it, but Eden do a supplement called Joint Support that is in powder form.

Alternatively, here is an easy recipe for "pill pockets" which might help so you're not limited to supplement in powder form?

Commercial pill pockets are available, but the above is cheap, tasty and easy to make.

We use Riaflex alongside their green lipped mussel and my boy was massivelyimproved after about a month on that, compared to the Yumove that he used to be on. Riaflex might be easier if your dog doesn’t like taking pills as well. We sprinkle it onto a little wet food and mix it in and he doesn’t even notice it.

I would also look into high strength omega oils, as there is actually more scientific evidence to support that for joint care/arthritis (in dogs and humans) than there is for most supplements. It’s usually in liquid or liquid capsule form and tastes fishy, so you can just squirt it on their dinner and most will accept it.

Definitely have a good read of the Canine Arthritis Management information, that’s where I started my research.

Most dogs will eat Yumove in their food btw... I’ve never had to resort to giving it separately.

Our dog has bilateral luxating patella and he has been on Canine Joint Right powder since he was about 2 , is now 11 and still running about with absolutely no issues . I get it from a company called Horse supplements direct and it is very economical .

Jointsure is the same as Yumove but much cheaper. Amazon do a buy two get one free offer and it works out at half the price.

Paddingtonthebear · 09/08/2021 16:53

Fab thanks everyone, I’ve ordered Jointsure
