Helping pup stop eating his bedding

7 month lab pup who likes to tear soft bedding to bits - vet bedding, towels, blankets, dog beds. He tore a strip off his coolaroo bed a month ago but fortunately it's not stuffed so was able to repair and he hasn't attempted to gnaw at it since but have come down in the early hours to ripped up vet bedding or de-stuffed crate mats many times and worried about him eating it. He loves going for pretty much anything soft furnishing/clothing but he's got very, very good at "leave it" with kind, even toned consistent redirection so doesn't trash when unsupervised but obviously don't supervise him on his bed throughout the night. Any suggestions or recommendations gratefully received as can neither afford constant replacements but want pup to be comfy and safe.

Plastic moulded bed
Cushions covered in very thick covers (you know the coarse material that feels quite rough)
Then old blanket over the top for coziness

Seems to have stopped the shredding tendencies Grin

Plastic bed and blankets I used to get my dog fleece either from primark or B&M , he did chew on the blankets but he never really ripped them up. He ruined a lot of fancy beds before I just gave into plastic.

Vet bed is brilliant for young pups. It comes in a roll and you can cut to size, soft and washable with rubber backing. Not expensive and lasts for ages.

A plastic bed and an old duvet that smells of you.

Thank you for the suggestions. We've got a plastic bed for him but I worry about him eating the bedding - he's chewed several vet bed liners to a holey mess and I'm concerned what having that in his tum will do. Will try the old blanket with close supervision!

My Labrador did this. Working on the basis that sheepswool is something that that would be eaten by wild canids I bought old pure wool blankets from a charity shop. It didn't stop him chewing (he grew out of it) but it stopped him eating artificial fibres.

That's reassuring to hear, spaniel - thank you for the suggestion, too. I know he sees his bedding as high value as we've been taking it away if he wrecks it so it's super interesting to him as are towels but tea towels hanging on the kitchen he couldn't be less interested in because they are just there so need to strike the balance between him just seeing stuff as everyday and keeping an eye that he doesn't happen his tum gutsing down blankets or bed filling. He's a funny pup - now we just leave shoes lying around he couldn't be less interested! But you do have to be willing to sacrifice a few items to get to this point!

Does he spend a lot of time in a crate?

bingohandjob · 14/08/2021 16:49

No, overnight. Door left open throughout day and he chooses to nap on and off in there, has his Kongs in there and he goes into crate at night himself and we leave door open until normally my husband goes to bed around midnight and I'm up then at 6, open the door quietly and he'll often keep on sleeping for an hour in there.
